Effenberg pays penalty
![]() Effenberg helped Bayern to win the European Cup
Bayern Munich captain Stefan Effenberg has been fined for a nightclub assault on a woman.
The German international was ordered by a court on Thursday to pay a DM125,000 (£49,400) fine for hitting the women at a Munich nightspot. He was also told to pay her DM22,000 (£7,100) compensation. Effenberg had appealed an earlier decision to give him a jail sentence for the charge of causing bodily injury. Prosecutors said Effenberg had hit the 31-year-old London woman last October in an argument over a reserved seat at the exclusive P1 disco. He later claimed he was only defending himself after the woman threw a glass of champagne at his face. Munich prosecutors had offered to dismiss the case originally for a DM400,000 (£129,330) fine. But Effenberg, who helped his club to lift the European Cup last May with a victory over Valencia on penalties, had rejected the plea bargain. His club also fined him DM50,000 (£16,160) for the incident.
