Boavista crowned champions
Cafu of Roma tussles with Erivan Lima
Boavista have won their first league title
Boavista won the Portuguese premier league for the first time when they beat Aves 3-0 on Friday.

It is the first league title in the club's 97-year history and the first time in more than half a century that a club other than Portugal's "big three" of Benfica, Porto and Sporting has won the championship.

With only one match remaining, Boavista have 77 points, seven points clear of Porto, who play relegated Estrela Amadora on Monday, on 70 with a game in hand.

Boavista manager Jaime Pacheco said amid scenes of celebration: "We are the champions, because we are the best!"

Flag-waving supporters filled Oporto's Boavista district and stopped traffic while chanting: "Champions! Champions!"

Bolivian striker Erwin Sanchez opened the scoring against Aves when he converted a free kick from 25 yards with a powerful low drive in the 23rd minute.

Striker Elpidio Silva took the scoreline to 2-0 early in the second half when he converted a corner and Whelliton sealed Boavista's historic victory in the 65th minute by heading home a right cross.
