Scholl scoops award
England's Phil Neville is chased by Mehmet Scholl

Bayern Munich midfielder Mehmet Scholl has been voted Player of the Year 2000 by Germany's professional players.

Scholl, who won 151 of 662 votes in the ballot by the Union of Professional Footballers, was delighted with the award.

"This is the nicest prize I've ever won. You have to win the respect of your colleagues and this means a lot to me," said the international.

Scholl was instrumental in Bayern's campaign for the Bundesliga title and was one of the few players to emerge with credit from Germany's disastrous Euro 2000 performance.

Midfielder Michael Ballack and central defender Jens Nowotny, both with Bayer Leverkusen, came second and third with 139 and 75 votes respectively.
