Croatia 2-1 Germany

German team manager Oliver Bierhoff was unhappy with his side's efforts

Germany coach Joachim Low felt his side only had themselves to blame for their surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Croatia at Euro 2008.

"Looking back at the match we deserved to lose. We were unable to play our combinations or play fluidly," he said.

"The Croats pulled back after scoring their first goal and we were unable to penetrate their defence, which is why we have to accept the defeat.

"We cannot be satisfied. We were unable to do what we know we can do."

Low said that Germany had shot themselves in the foot with their tactical approach to the game in Klagenfurt.

"Overall we were a weak team," Low added.

"We didn't manage to play through the midfield, we played too many high balls, our game off the ball was bad, we did not run the combinations and precision was lacking."

Germany must now beat Austria in their final group game on Monday to progress to the quarter-finals, where it is likely they will face Portugal from Group A.

Low said he would scrutinise the tape of the match in order to rectify his side's mistakes.

"We are disappointed to have lost the second match," he said.

"Give me a day to find the reasons behind this. I can name some now but we must sit down and analyse this result.

"This is a setback after our initial win against Poland but we are in a position to show a different face on Monday."

Goalscorer Lukas Podolski added: "We ran too little, even without the ball, we didn't move enough and therefore I think the game fell through. We just didn't respond.

"You have to constantly prove yourself, that's the difficult part of a tournament like this, one win isn't enough.

"I hope we can get past this now, we must show a clear reaction against Austria."
