After 12 years of foreign coaches the Swiss FA turned to Jakob 'Koebi' Kuhn to take the national side forward.
Appointed: June 2001
Despite some dissatisfaction at his appointment, Kuhn sparked a renaissance in Swiss football and led the side to automatic qualification for Euro 2004.
Kuhn took over from Argentinian Enzo Trossero in June 2001 after working with the country's youth teams.
Immaculately polite but strong willed, Kuhn has sacrificed many of the old guard in favour of his young tyros.
Seven of the Under-21 side that reached the semi-finals of the 2002 European Championship are now in the senior squad.
Kuhn played over 500 games for FC Zurich, won the Swiss title six times, the Cup five times and reached two European Cup semi-finals.
Did you know? Kuhn was one of the country's most popular footballers in the 1960s, winning 63 caps.
