A strong central defender, Jean-Alain Boumsong is seen by many as the long-term successor to France captain Marcel Desailly.
Born in Cameroon, Boumsong moved to France as a teenager and made his professional debut at Le Havre in 1998.
He transferred to Auxerre and helped Guy Roux's side qualify for the Champions League.
In January 2004, Boumsong snubbed a move to Liverpool and will sign for Scottish giants Rangers in the summer.
His performances at Under-21 level have been impressive, especially his pace and reading of the game.
Despite his relative inexperience in the senior side, Boumsong was selected for Euro 2004 ahead of his equally-promising central defensive partner at Auxerre, Philippe Mexes.
Did you know? Boumsong played just once in qualifying but scored in the 3-0 defeat of Israel.
