Beckham's penalty promise
David Beckham takes the penalty against France
Captain David Beckham says he is happy to carry on taking penalties for England, despite missing a spot-kick in the 2-1 defeat by France on Sunday.

The Real Madrid player saw his 73rd-minute effort saved by Fabien Barthez in Lisbon.

But he said: "Whenever I've missed a penalty in the past for Manchester United or England I've always said I would carry on taking them.

"I will put myself up again and take another one if needs be."

Beckham also insists that the England team have got over the disappointment of the defeat in their opening game and are ready to bounce back against Switzerland on Thursday.

"The French game is now out of the way," he said. "For 90 minutes we played some of our best football, our positional play in that game was possibly the best it's ever been.

There is no fear in the camp because we're ready for what comes our way

"I think we proved that we can play against the best and compete with them. Now we have to get some points.

"The players can't actually wait to get this game started. From the word go we have to try and hit Switzerland as hard as we can and use the frustration from the other night."

Sol Campbell said he believes John Terry can become England's defensive rock for the next few years.

Terry is poised to replace Ledley King in Coimbra after recovering from a hamstring strain that kept him out against France.

"People are looking at John in a different light because he plays for a team chasing the Champions League and the Premiership, but he has responded brilliantly.

"He has had a fantastic season, and both him and Ledley have great England futures."

Campbell was also full of praise for his former Spurs colleague King, who came in and performed superbly in the 2-1 defeat against France.

He said: "Ledley came in and held his own in a very difficult situation against France he stood tall and got through it."

The Arsenal man said the senior players in the squad are making sure young stars like Wayne Rooney are staying focused on the task ahead.

"Experience comes into it," the Arsenal defender said. "And there are enough experienced lads around to make sure the squad recover quickly.

"We are helping those players who don't have as many caps to put the France defeat into perspective.

"There is no fear in the camp because we're ready for what comes our way."

England goalkeeper David James said it would not matter how they beat the Swiss, as long as they do.

"The defeat to France was an awakening because now we cannot afford to lose the next two matches," said the Manchester City stopper.

"Every game has to be taken seriously and it would be naive of us to assume Switzerland aren't very good.

"We will take heart from the French display and take that forward. But if we put on a rubbish performance against the Swiss and still win I will be happy."
