England's Nicky Butt has admitted his knee injury has all but ended his hopes of playing any part in Euro 2004.
A scan revealed the Manchester United midfielder damaged medial ligaments in his right knee during a training session on Monday.
"I've not given up hope because you don't know how quickly it will heal.
"But realistically I've been told it will be two or three weeks and if that's the case then my tournament is over," said Butt.
The FA asked Uefa to clarify the regulations regarding calling up a replacement, but were told that was not possible because the injury did not happen in "exceptional circumstances".
Captain David Beckham said of Butt's misfortune: "It's very sad for Nicky and upsetting for us because someone like him in the squad is important."
