Ronaldo heads home for Portugal from Figo's corner to give the hosts faint hope in the dying seconds.

90 mins + 2: A despairing Deco fires in another long-range effort which the Greek keeper gathers comfortably.

86 mins: Gomes brings a good low save out of Nikopolidis with a shot from just outside the box.

83 mins: Ronaldo sees a shot from 10 yards deflected off Seitaridis.

79 mins: Deco cuts in from the left to unleash a 20-yard effort but it is just wide. A Ronaldo shot on the turn is blocked moments later.

74 mins: Midfielder Lakis comes on for Greece in place of forward Charisteas. A minute later, Seitaridis is booked for a cynical foul on Figo.

70 mins: The crowd show their frustration as yet another Ronaldo cross into the Greece area is not met by a Portuguese player.

68 mins Forward Nikolaidis replaces midfielder Giannakopoulos, who looks to have picked up an knock.

66 mins: Portugal striker Gomes comes on for midfielder Costinha.

57 mins: Pauleta is yellow-carded for leaving a high boot in on Fyssas.

51 mins: GOAL: Portugal 0-2 Greece
Ronaldo catches Seitaridis awkwardly in the Portugal box and Basinas blasts home the subsequent penalty.

46 mins: Portugal replace Rui Costa and Simao with Deco and Ronaldo for the start of the second half. Katsouranis replaces Karagounis for Greece.

HALF-TIME: Championship outsiders Greece go in 1-0 up against the hosts.

39 mins: Goalscorer Karagounis is booked for obstruction on Ferreira.

32 mins: Greek keeper Nikopolidis is quick off his line to quell the threat of Simao after he sets up his own close-range opportunity.

26 mins: Figo draws two defenders, allowing Ferreira to cross for Rui Costa but his header goes tamely wide.

13 mins: A sweeping interchange between Giannakopoulos and Vryzas sets up another opportunity for the confident Greeks.

10 mins: Defender Kapsis makes a fine tackle to dispossess Figo in the Greek area.

7 mins: GOAL: Portugal 0-1 Greece
Portugal fail to close down the advancing Karagounis and he strikes for Greece from 25 yards.

1 min: Charisteas misses a good half chance for Greece inside the Portuguese box.

1700 BST:The match kicks off.


Pre-match build-up:

The gates of the perimeter area around Estadio do Dragao opened at 1415 BST and eager fans flooded in for the opening game of Euro 2004.

The Portuguese national colours of green, red and yellow are everywhere, interspersed with the blue and white of the Greek flag.

Most home fans seem convinced their team will not only beat Greece but make a real impression, perhaps even go on to win the tournament.

A short opening ceremony celebrating the Portuguese people and their achievements preceded the 1700 kick-off. The temperature in the stadium is 33C degrees (91F).


Team news:

Portugal coach Felipe Scolari stuck to his word, sending out the line-up he announced on Friday, with lone striker Pauleta and an attacking midfield.

Greece coach Otto Rehhagel fielded a defensive line-up with attack-minded Vassilios Tsiartas and striker Demis Nikolaidis the surprise exclusions.

They were left out in favour of Angelos Charisteas and Angelis Basinas.

Portugal: Ricardo, Paulo Ferreira, Jorge Andrade, Fernando Couto, Rui Jorge, Costinha, Maniche, Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Pauleta, Simao Sabrosa.

Greece: Antonis Nikopolidis, Takis Fyssas, Traianos Dellas, Angelo Basinas, Yourkas Seitaridis, Giorgos Karagounis, Theodoros Zagorakis, Stelios Giannakopoulos, Mihails Kapsis, Angelos Charisteas, Zisis Vryzas.
