Sheringham inspires Man Utd rout

Sheringham celebrates his hat-trick with Giggs
Manchester United 5-0 Southampton

Teddy Sheringham scored a hat-trick as Manchester United cruised to victory against a porous Southampton side at Old Trafford.

His strike partner Andy Cole helped himself to two goals and United could have scored many more.

Southampton were worryingly inept in defence and their goalkeeper Paul Jones presented United with a farcical opener after nine minutes.

Acting captain Ryan Giggs played the ball in to Cole from the left and the striker turned to dispatch a seemingly innocuous drive from 20 yards.

I don't see why we can't offer Teddy a new contract. He was fantastic, and that's his first hat-trick for the club
Sir Alex Ferguson, Man Utd manager
Southampton's keeper crouched to take the ball in his arms, but let it squirm out of his grasp and through his legs into the goal.

Then five minutes later Jones dropped a Beckham corner unchallenged on the edge of his six yard box and was lucky to collect at his second attempt.

Slow tempo

United dropped their tempo and allowed Southampton into the game after this.

Kachloul was impressive for the visitors and played Draper in on the edge of the area after half-an-hour, only for the former Aston Villa midfielder to blaze wastefully over the crossbar.

United started to play with more urgency toward the end of the half.

We got ourselves into great positions but we've not had the creativity or quality to turn them into goals
  Glenn Hoddle, Saints manager
In stoppage time Beckham curled in a delightful cross from the right, which Sheringham looked like he could hit first time, but instead drove across the face of goal after several touches.

The Southampton defence cleared to safety, but the ball was soon back at Sheringham's feet in the left-hand corner of the area and he steadied himself before lobbing the ball delicately over Jones.

After 51 minutes Beckham powered down the right, and with numerous options, he squared for Sheringham to score with an emphatic shot from 10 yards out.

Sheringham completed his hat-trick four minutes later. Butt played Cole in the box, and the ball ricochet to his strike partner, who coolly slotted the ball into the net from level with the penalty spot.

Tessem/ Giggs

Giggs hit a shot from the edge of the area and the ball hit the crossbar and bounced down close to the line.

But United got an unquestionable fifth after 73 minutes. Beckham hit in a corner, Scholes flicked on at the near post and Cole headed in unchallenged from two yards out.

United then piled forward in search of more goals. Substitute Dwight Yorke had two excellent chances near the end and was denied by excellent saves from Jones.

Man Utd: Barthez, P. Neville, Irwin, Brown, G. Neville, Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Sheringham, Cole, Giggs. Subs: Van Der Gouw, Solskjaer, Yorke, Wallwork, Silvestre.

Southampton: Jones, Dodd, Lundekvam, Oakley, Draper, Davies, Pahars, Bridge, El Khalej, Tessem, Kachloul. Subs: Moss, Marsden, Ripley, Benali, Beattie.
