Man United v Leeds clockwatch
![]() Dwight Yorke celebrates his first Premiership goal of the season
Manchester United 3-0 Leeds United:
88 mins: Fortune's through ball sends Solskjaer scampering through again, but his shot deflects wide of the far post with Robinson struggling to reach it. The corner works its way to Beckham, but he blazes a shot woefully off target, to hoots of mock derision from the home fans, who quickly turn to chanting his name. 84 mins: Robinson is called into action again to tip a stinging drive from Phil Neville over the crossbar. But for the young keeper, Leeds could have been facing a thrashing.
83 mins: Beckham is involved again as Manchester United turn the screw with a third goal. His cross is helped goalwards by Solskjaer but it's Matthew Jones who gets the final touch as his attempted interception results in an own goal. 81 mins: Beckham sends another free kick just over the bar after Butt is blatantly obstructed by Matteo on the edge of the box. 79 mins: Hay has a good chance to spark a late Leeds fightback, but send a header flying high over the crossbar from Bowyer's corner. 77 mins: Yorke spins away from Woodgat and whips in a left-footed shot which flies across the face of the Leeds goal. 70 mins: Scholes' flick sets Beckham scampering down the right and he returns the ball in for Scholes to get in a flick which is blocked by Woodgate. From the corner, Solskjaer flicks a neat effort low to the near post but sees the shot brilliantly tipped round by the outstanding Robinson.
61 mins: Smith tangles with Silvestre as the game begins to boil over and Bowyer is frustratedat not being allowed to capitalise on a quick free kick. That frustration gets the better of him as an ill-timed challenge on Phil Neville produces another yellow card. 60 mins: Smith is harshly adjudged to have fouled Barthez as the Leeds striker closes down a loose ball, but his protests probably have as much to do with the resultant yellow card as the challenge itself. 54 mins: With the home side in full flow, more good work by Solskjaer leads to Nicky Butt drilling a low shot which is comfortably saved by Robinson down to his left. 47 mins: Jacob Burns and Solskjaer tangle off the ball on the edge of the Leeds area and referee Jeff Winter controversially awards the free kick the home side's way as Gary Kelly brings the ball away full 20 yards from the incident.
Beckham steps up to take the free kick and his strike deflects wickedly off Bowyer and into the net with Robinson going the wrong way. Half time: Manchester United 1-0 Leeds United 44 mins: Having looked set to reach half-time goalless, Leeds are now fighting to stay in touch. Solskjaer again turns well to shake off Gary Kelly and fire in a shot that is superbly parried by the agile Robinson. 40 mins: Leeds still look dangerous on the break, but a weak shot from Smith when Viduka was better placed proves crucial.
From the resulting goal kick, the home side build down the right, Beckham sending Solskjaer clear, and his inch-perfect low cross to the far post is headed home by the resurgent Yorke, despite Leeds claims for offside.
36 mins: Solskjaer brilliantly spins past Danny Hay to make space for a cross-shot which is only half-cleared by Dominic Matteo, who is fortunate not to see the loose ball fall to a Manchester United player. 37 mins: A prolonged spell of pressure from the home side sees Ronnie Johnsen play a delightful ball into space for Fortune, but his first touch lets him down and his shot is blocked by Hay for a corner.
32 mins: Solskjaer is in the wars too, suffering a nosebleed after catching a boot in the face as he stooped to flick on Beckham's cross. 30 mins: Smith appears to have shaken off his injury, but Roy Keane is struggling for the home side and the Manchester United skipper is replaced by David Beckham. 20 mins: Viduka gets between two Manchester United defenders to connect with Smith's cross, but his header drifts tamely wide of the left-hand post. 17 mins: Nicky Butt makes space for himself and fires in a shot which Robinson pushes round the post at full stretch. From the resulting corner, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nods down for Dwight Yorke, but the striker can't keep his strike down and the ball sails over the Leeds crossbar. 15 mins: David O'Leary's injury headache looks set to get worse as Alan Smith turns his ankle in a challenge with Gary Neville, though the striker attempts to run the injury off. 10 mins: Mikael Silvestre's ill-judged back header fails to reach Fabien Barthez and Bowyer nips in between the pair but can only steer his interception onto the roof of the net, with Mark Viduka waiting unmarked in front of goal. 6 mins: A swift Leeds counter-attack catches the home side napping and Lee Bowyer is an inch away from connecting with Alan Smith's low centre from the right. 4 mins: Stand-in Leeds keeper Paul Robinson makes a fine save from the game's opening effort, diving full stretch to his right to palm away Quinton Fortune's left-foot drive.
Man Utd: Barthez, G. Neville, Silvestre, Johnsen, P. Neville, Fortune, Butt, Scholes, Keane, Yorke, Solskjaer. Subs: Bosnich, Beckham, Giggs, Brown, Cole. Leeds: Robinson, Kelly, Matteo, Hay, Woodgate, Bowyer, McPhail, Jones, Burns, Smith, Viduka. Subs: Huckerby, Milosevic, Molenaar, Evans, Hackworth. Referee: J Winter (Stockton-on-Tees).
