Man City   3 - 0   Stoke

Tevez salutes the Eastlands crowd after his majestic opener

Two moments of genius from Carlos Tevez helped Manchester City to third in the Premier League and on the verge of an automatic Champions League spot.

Tevez played a one-two with James Milner on the edge of the box before turning two Stoke defenders inside-out and scoring with a fierce rising drive.

City, who had beaten Stoke only three days earlier to lift the FA Cup, made it 2-0 when Joleon Lescott headed in.

And Tevez smashed in a bending 30-yard free-kick to seal an impressive win.

It is a victory that, crucially with only one league game remaining, gives City a one-point advantage over now-fourth Arsenal in the race to avoid having to negotiate a tricky Champions League qualifier.

The Gunners face an away match at Fulham on the last day of the season, while City boss Roberto Mancini and his men will only have to match their rivals' result from their closing trip to Bolton to cap a fine campaign that has already brought City their first silverware in 35 years.

And it was the memory - and outcome - of last Saturday's Wembley final that seemed to be dictating events at Eastlands as the two protagonists faced each other again with only a few days having passed.

City, full of life and fluent, bossed proceedings while Stoke looked every bit as jaded as you would expect of recent losing finalists.

The relative rewards on offer - entry into Europe's premier competition for City, a top-10 Premier League finish for Stoke - may have also played a part in the home side's dominance.

But City, who brought in Adam Johnson, Pablo Zabaleta and James Milner in three changes from Saturday, must be given credit for an assured and incisive display.

Milner was the most effective of the new faces, despite screwing a volley horribly wide early on, and he was involved in City's opener.

The midfielder exchanged a one-two with Tevez, giving his skipper the opportunity to delve into his bag of tricks and come up with a magically taken goal.

It was the kind of moment that surely must mean City will do all they can to hang on to their talisman in the summer.

At the other end, City were solid, keeping the visitors at bay with ease - and they were even prepared to throw their bodies in the way during a rare scare when goalkeeper Joe Hart flapped at a cross and John Carew's venomous volley flattened Micah Richards.

Aside form a tame effort from Glenn Whelan, that was all Stoke could muster as they looked unable to raise themselves and unable to cope with five changes from Saturday's line-up.

By contrast, City almost scored again when David Silva was inches away from connecting with a cross, Milner's low drive was hacked clear and Tevez curled a shot with the outside of his boot into Thomas Sorensen's midriff.

Yaya Toure sent an ambitious effort over the top as he responded to encouragement to shoot from the home fans still rejoicing in the Ivorian's Wembley winner.

City did finally translate their superiority into a second goal when Adam Johnson's free-kick was headed in by Lescott, who stole in ahead of keeper Sorensen.

It effectively ended any sense of the game being a contest and had there been any lingering doubts at all they should have been ended by Edin Dzeko.

The substitute did well to cut inside Danny Collins only to shoot weakly at Sorensen.

City did not have to wait long for a third goal, though, and when it came, it did so in emphatic style.

Standing ready to take a free-kick about 30 yards out, Tevez eyed up his options before smashing a shot with outrageous bend and pace into the top corner.

Dzeko almost added another when he cracked a shot against the outside of the post, and Tevez dinked a free-kick over as he looked to complete his hat-trick.

Tevez was substituted and received a standing ovation on 88 minutes, and the reception of the fans as well as the knowledge that City are a huge step closer to competing with Europe's best next season may just persuade him to remain at the club.
