Newcastle   4 - 1   Wolverhampton

Shola Ameobi scores for Newcastle
Ameobi was one of Newcastle's star players

By Saj Chowdhury

Newcastle left Wolves in the Premier League relegation mire following a comfortable win at St James' Park.

Kevin Nolan gave the Magpies the lead when he slotted in after advancing on to Shola Ameobi's headed flick-on.

Ameobi doubled the lead before the break with a powerful header before Peter Lovenkrands slotted in the third.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scored Wolves' reply from close range but Jonas Gutierrez made it 4-1 after cutting from the left and firing in low.

The Argentine celebrated his splendid solo effort and finish wildly on the touchline while Newcastle fans cheered with equal amounts of ecstasy knowing that their side are now likely to avoid a second relegation in three seasons.

It was a different story for Wolves. The result leaves Mick McCarthy's side still among the relegation places, but what will disturb the Yorkshireman more was the way his usually feisty performers were out-battled during much of the match.

Pardew hails 'great day' for Newcastle

Admittedly, they went into the match having only taken eight points from 15 away matches but with their Premier League existence at stake McCarthy would have hoped for a little more from his side.

The damage was done in the first half. For much of the half, Wolves lost first and second balls to a dominant Newcastle midfield that was once again brilliantly marshalled by man-of-the-match Joey Barton.

The former Manchester City player was involved in Newcastle's first attack when he floated a 50-yard free-kick into the area from which Mike Williamson's header forced a fine save from Wayne Hennessey.

Barton then delivered another delightful free-kick which this time was met by the head of Nolan and again forced a good save from the Wolves stopper.

Newcastle finally broke through after 22 minutes when Nolan scored his 12th of the season, squeezing his shot through Hennessey's legs after Ameobi flicked on centre-back Williamson's long punt.

Underemployed Magpies keeper Steve Harper was finally called into action two minutes before the break when he made a fantastic low save to block a header from Ebanks-Blake.

Within a minute of that chance, Wolves found themselves 2-0 down. The whippet-like Lovenkrands floated a ball from the left to the back post for Ameobi to head in. It was a deserved goal for the local striker, who won the physical battle up front against Christophe Berra.

Five minutes after the restart, the Magpies made it 3-0 when Coloccini fed Barton on the right and the midfielder's low delivery was sidefooted in by Lovenkrands.

With the points seemingly assured Newcastle eased off the pressure, allowing Wolves to gain more of a foothold and they were given hope when Ebanks-Blake converted Matt Jarvis' cross from about eight yards.

McCarthy bemoans 'ridiculous' defending

St James' Park had already witnessed one great comeback this season when the home side fought back from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 with Arsenal and briefly it looked as if Wolves could serve up another thrilling finale.

The visitors should have reduced the deficit further but substitute Steven Fletcher headed Jamie O'Hara's free-kick on to the foot of the post after finding himself unmarked.

Moments later, Ebanks-Blake saw his header nodded off line by full-back James Perch.

But the comeback was not to be and late in the game Gutierrez drove forward from the left to give the result a one-sided look with an emphatic finish.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew:
"It was a great day for us - there were some great performances in particular from Shola Ameobi and Joey Barton.

"Wolves did threaten in the second half and we had to see that period out.

"Seven points is a lot for teams in the relegation zone to make up. One win and couple of draws be enough for us."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"Newcastle are not a team who are an easy touch.

"You don't come up here as Wolves and expect to beat them just because we've had a bit of momentum and have been playing well.

"Does a team that has been in the bottom three as long as we have suddenly become a great team that is going to play well every week? As much as we'd like to, no it doesn't.

"We'll regroup on Monday and get ready for Everton and we'll be better.

"It's a bad day in the office and we'll smart for a couple of days but we've got to crack on and get ready for the next one."
