Stoke   4 - 0   Newcastle

Jermaine Pennant scores Stoke's second
Pennant took advantage of Harper's mistake earlier in the move

By Saj Chowdhury

Stoke maintained their unbeaten run at home in 2011 with a superb victory over Newcastle in an entertaining match.

The home side took the lead when Jon Walters headed in Jermaine Pennant's cross from the right.

They added a second a minute after the interval when Pennant capitalised on a earlier mistake by Newcastle keeper Steve Harper to sweep in.

Danny Higginbotham made it 3-0 with a 20-yard free-kick before Ricardo Fuller smashed in from 12 yards late on.

The result moves Stoke above Newcastle in the table and with matches against Chelsea, Tottenham and a FA Cup semi-final against Bolton on the horizon, this was a crucial win for the Potters.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have now picked up only one win in 10 matches.

Pulis pleased with 'fantastic' display

And should they fail to pick up points from games against Wolves, Aston Villa and Blackpool there may be a sense of deja vu among the Toon Army, who watched their team drop out of the Premier League two years ago.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew made sure his had done their homework on the threat from Rory Delap's throw-ins and they coped admirably.

But Stoke won the match as a result of fantastic wing play, with Pennant acting as the catalyst during many of his side's forays forward.

Stoke created the first chance of the match when Marc Wilson arrived late to head Pennant's corner a yard wide.

Newcastle had adopted a 3-5-2 formation but they were dealt a blow when Jose Enrique, who had just returned from injury, limped off with what appeared to be a recurrence of his hamstring problem.

Five minutes later, Stoke took the lead. Ryan Shawcross laid the ball to Pennant on the right and his cross was brilliantly glanced in by Walters.

Newcastle twice came close to equalising and were twice denied by Higginbotham.

The defender did not know much about the first, when Shola Ameobi's fierce shot struck his face but he was conscious to the second, a crucial interception of Kevin Nolan's low ball across the six-yard area.

Those chances gave the visitors belief they could get back into the match but those hopes were dealt a blow by Harper's mistake early into the second half.

The Newcastle number one failed to clear under pressure from Kenwyne Jones and the former Sunderland forward picked out Matthew Etherington on the left, whose delivery was guided past Harper by Pennant from about six yards out.

Pardew admits to 'sloppy' play

Newcastle were rattled and they succumbed to a third goal when Higginbotham arrowed in a fantastic free-kick from 20 yards, with Harper rooted to his spot.

The Magpies had come back from 4-0 down to draw against Arsenal this season and they were faced with producing another miracle.

But apart from some left-wing magic from Ferguson, which forced a save from Asmir Begovic, and a Joey Barton free-kick that was tipped over by the keeper, it never looked like they would repeat that feat.

And in the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Fuller completed a superb day in the Staffordshire sunshine for the home side when he scored a fourth with a low, angled drive.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis:
"We are pleased, we knew it was going to be a tough game.

"On the back of what we did against West Ham there was a concern the players might not be focused and a little bit drained.

"We are doing things at this club that have not happened for 39 years. The players are not used to the pressure of playing in these competitions at the level we are dealing with now."
