Bolton   1 - 1   Wigan

Rodrigo Moreno
Rodrigo Moreno capped a vibrant display with his first Bolton goal

By Les Roopanarine

Wigan overcame a double injury blow and a revitalised second-half performance from Bolton to rescue a deserved point.

Having lost midfielder Tom Cleverley to a 10th-minute hamstring injury, the visitors fell behind to a close-range Rodrigo Moreno goal on 54 minutes.

Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland then left the field on a stretcher after a heavy collision with Johan Elmander.

But Ronnie Stam scored a late equaliser from Steve Gohouri's pass, and Wigan survived a late Bolton barrage.

With both teams looking to bounce back from weekend defeats suffered in contrasting circumstances, there was an air of inevitability about the result. Yet the manner of it, after a forgettable first half, was anything but expected.

Just as a rain-lashed evening looked to be drifting away towards mediocrity, Bolton discovered their second wind. Their new-found vigour was matched by an admirable determination on Wigan's part to make light of adversity.

Nobody embodied the relegation-threatened visitors' defiance more than 38-year-old substitute goalkeeper Mike Pollitt, who replaced the unlucky Kirkland in goal and pulled off a string of crucial saves as the home side laid siege to Wigan's goal in the closing stages.

Bolton, forced by injury and other factors to contest their fourth game in 11 days without several key players, again fielded only four substitutes, just as they had done at Anfield on Saturday.

But while they were depleted in numbers, Owen Coyle's side lacked nothing in spirit as they looked to erase the memory of their contentious injury-time loss to Liverpool.

Bolton boss Coyle confirms Vela bid

Liverpool are the only side to have left Bolton with all three points this season, and with better finishing, most notably from Elmander and substitute Martin Petrov late on, Coyle's side might have added further lustre to that impressive record.

In Wigan, however, they were facing a side similarly intent on avoiding another dispiriting defeat.

Visiting manager Roberto Martinez suggested in the aftermath of Sunday's lacklustre 1-0 home loss to Newcastle, which ended a four-game unbeaten run, that his side had played as poorly as they could.

Improvement is inevitable when you reach rock bottom, and after a testing first-half, this was a far more focused Wigan performance.

The visitors suffered an early setback when Cleverley, the young midfielder who has been so influential for them since arriving on loan from Manchester United at the season's outset, limped off with a hamstring injury.

In his absence, the spotlight fell on another youthful wide man, Bolton's Rodrigo.

On loan from Benfica for the season, the teenager tormented Maynor Figueroa, the returning Wigan left-back, exhibiting all the pedigree and technical virtuosity one would expect from a Brazilian-born Spaniard schooled at Real Madrid.

However, for all Rodrigo's probing, and despite enjoying a healthy 57% of first-half possession, Bolton struggled to create an opening until Kevin Davies headed wide from Matthew Taylor's far-post corner with half-time approaching.

They might even have fallen behind, had Jussi Jaaskelainen not pulled off a sprawling save from Hugo Rodallega's 25-yard free-kick.

In Coyle, however, Bolton have a master motivator. Whatever words of encouragement he uttered at half-time, they worked wonders.

Bolton re-emerged like men on a mission, and Gary Cahill had already gone close with a glancing header by the time they took the lead in the 54th minute.

The goal, no less than Rodrigo's sparkling performance merited, was a study in simplicity, Davies slipping him in with an incisive touch from the edge of the area and the Spaniard lashing home at the near post.

Wigan's night took a further turn for the worse when Kirkland - standing in for Ali Al-Habsi, who was unable to play under the terms of his loan deal from Bolton - raced from his line to cut out an excellent through ball from Rodrigo. He ploughed into the blameless Elmander, and was carried off on a stretcher.

Martinez happy with Wigan spirit

Kirkland was replaced by Pollitt, who had conceded 23 goals in his last six appearances for Wigan.

In an early sign of busier times to come, the veteran keeper was called into action almost immediately, smothering an effort from Elmander after a floating ball had bypassed the Wigan defence.

But when Rodallega found Gohouri on the right of Bolton's area with 10 minutes of normal time remaining, Bolton had cause to rue their top scorer's profligacy. Gohouri passed to Stam at the far-post, and the Dutchman stretched to tuck home the equaliser.

It set the scene for a frantic finale, but even eight added minutes, and a sustained Bolton onslaught, could not break the defiance of Pollitt, who pulled off a string of outstanding saves to earn Wigan a deserved point.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle:

"We carved out some great opportunities, but Mike Pollitt made some outstanding saves.

"In the second half I thought my lads were terrific.

"We're disappointed only to get a point from the game."

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez:

"We know how difficult it is to get a result at the Reebok this season.

"[The injury suffered by Chris Kirkland] was a nasty clash, with both players sliding on the ground, but the first news we've had is quite positive, and we hope he's going to be alright."
