Bolton   2 - 0   West Brom

Matt Taylor
Taylor's first-half opener was his first goal of the season

By Owen Phillips

Matt Taylor and Johan Elmander scored as Bolton kept up the pressure on the top five in the Premier League with a clinical win over wasteful West Brom.

The Baggies created the better chances with Peter Odemwingie spurning three excellent openings for the visitors.

But West Brom fell behind before the break when Lee Chung-Yong showed great composure to tee up Matt Taylor who side-footed in from close range.

And Elmander sealed victory late on, slotting home at the second attempt.

The Swede's ninth league goal of the season - with only four minutes left - came towards the end of the home side's best spell of an enthralling game.

Di Matteo wants West Brom to be more clinical

But West Brom only have themselves to blame for not picking up at least a point from a fine display.

Odemwingie will certainly want to forget a miserable afternoon in front of goal.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle and his men have received plenty of praise for ditching the long-ball style so often associated with the Trotters in recent seasons.

And knowing a home win would give them a great chance to finish 2010 - and Coyle's first 12 months in charge - in contention for a European berth, they had every reason to prove their lofty position was no fluke.

But the home side struggled to contain opponents who played the majority of the neat, passing football.

After 15 minutes of probing and teasing in which neither side could muster a shot on goal, the Baggies started to get on top.

The visitors started to zip the ball around and looked threatening throughout with Chris Brunt and Graham Dorrans the main instigators and the loping style of Somen Tchoyi causing endless problems down the home team's right side.

Dorrans tested Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with a decent 20-yard effort and Tchoyi twice cut inside and fired efforts at goal.

Coyle watched Elmander blaze over after a swift breakaway move and surging run and pass from Fabrice Muamba in the Trotters' only noteworthy opening of a lively first 30 minutes.

But it was fit-again top scorer Odemwingie who had the best chances to put the visitors ahead before the break but on both occasions he was found wanting.

First the Nigeria international rushed a fine opening with his back to goal and shot hopelessly wide from close range.

And soon after he raced clear on the right but with the unmarked Dorrans screaming for a simple pass and Brunt also an option, the striker made a hash of his cross and the chance was gone.

Within seconds Bolton made them pay, showing the sort of composure in front of goal so missing from Odemwingie.

Taylor sent Lee clear and although keeper Scott Carson did well to force the South Korean wide, Lee retained possession and picked out Taylor, who slid the ball home from 10 yards five minutes before the break.

As bitter a blow as that was, West Brom continued to create opportunities.

Gonzalo Jara saw a shot tipped over after another fine move and the chances flowed after the restart.

Tchoyi fizzed a shot at Jaaskelainen and then the big Cameroonian dinked a delightful cross towards Brunt whose near-post header hit the inside of the post.

Brunt also flashed a shot into the side netting but still the goal would not come.

Brunt and Odemwingie played in James Morrison but the midfielder's touch was too heavy and Jaaskelainen was able to smother the ball.

Odemwingie almost got a touch on a fine teasing cross from a typically dangerous Brunt centre.

West Brom made us work for win - Coyle

And the same two players combined again moments later with the Nigerian shooting wastefully wide after a superb disguised pass from the left winger.

At the other end Elmander's acrobatic effort sailed over.

The excellent Brunt then teed up substitute Ismael Miller but the forward's side-footed effort was blocked by Gary Cahill.

But Miller's chance was the last decent one the visitors could muster and Coyle's men eased home in the final quarter of an hour.

Cahill had a chance to make it 2-0 but saw his shot scrambled away after a defensive melee and Stuart Holden's curling free-kick produced a good save from Carson.

Coyle could finally breathe a little easier when Elmander slotted home from a tight angle after running free on the right and making a mess of his initial attempted cross.

Bolton had the added bonus of a clean sheet - only their second in 27 Premier League matches.

They will face champions Chelsea on Wednesday in confident mood and - if the Blues lose to Arsenal on Monday - a win would lift Coyle's men above the west Londoners.
