Bolton   2 - 1   Blackburn

Fabrice Muamba and Johan Elmander
Bolton showed immense character and resolve to take all three points

By David Ornstein

Stuart Holden fired a dramatic late winner as Bolton beat Blackburn at home for the first time since 2000 and temporarily rose to fifth in the table.

After a poor first half the match came to life when Bolton's Mark Davies was sent off for an elbow on Phil Jones.

Blackburn pushed forward but it was the hosts who took the lead through substitute Fabrice Muamba's low strike.

Mame Biram Diouf looked to have sealed a point with a slotted equaliser but Holden's instant reply stole the show.

It was a thrilling end to a game that offered little entertainment early on but was transformed from the moment Bolton were reduced to 10 men.

Mark Davies' dismissal seemed to inspire the hosts and their advantage was hard earned, but when the visitors levelled they appeared well set to push on for victory.

606: DEBATE

Yet Owen Coyle's men would have the final word and the result saw them leapfrog Tottenham into a Europa League place on goal difference, although Spurs reclaimed that spot with a draw against Chelsea later on Sunday.

For Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce it was a miserable return to the club he managed for eight years between 1999 and 2007, his side remaining 13th in the Premier League and only five points above the relegation zone.

The Reebok Stadium has become something of a fortress this term, the Trotters losing only one of their nine home games and turning heads with an attractive brand of football.

This Bolton are barely recognisable from the one which Allardyce led yet one similarity is that they are on course for a top-eight finish, which the 56-year-old achieved four seasons running prior to his departure.

Allardyce has experienced a mixed start to life in the Ewood Park hotseat but his team arrived fresh from a 3-0 victory over Wolves and got off to a lively start.

Sending off helped us - Coyle

While Bolton were enjoying plenty of early possession, Blackburn looked dangerous on the counter-attack and carved out the first real chance as Jason Roberts sneaked ahead of his marker to glance El-Hadji Diouf's centre narrowly wide.

At the other end Bolton began pressing hard for the opener and Martin Petrov's low cross flashed through the six-yard box and just evaded Johan Elmander.

Petrov then stepped in from the left and fired wide following a slick break-away from a Blackburn corner, but the hosts could not capitalise on their superiority and Blackburn seemed to grow in confidence.

Jussi Jaaskelainen plucked Chris Samba's flicked header from under his crossbar and Roberts was released by Jones and brought down by Zat Knight, who might have been shown a red card if team-mate Gary Cahill had not been in close proximity.

Jaaskelainen then saved well from a Morten Gamst Pedersen free-kick, with Gael Givet miscuing the rebound, and Rovers wanted a penalty when Martin Olsson was hauled over by Holden.

There was little spike in this Lancashire derby until Mark Davies was given his marching orders for a second yellow card having led with his arm during an aerial challenge against Jones.

Allardyce slams 'diabolical' goal

Coyle replaced Chung-Yong Lee with Muamba to shore up Bolton's midfield and Olsson made way for Mame Biram Diouf as Allardyce went for all-out attack.

A Pedersen free-kick was well saved and Kevin Davies cleared off the goal line amid the resultant melee, before a Mame Biram Diouf header appeared to strike Knight's hand and Givet hooked over.

But it was Bolton who struck first blood, Muamba collecting a Ryan Nelsen clearance and dancing inside the New Zealander to plant a low finish past Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Rovers swiftly set about redressing the balance and laid siege to their opponents' goal, the Bolton defence repelling everything thrown at them until Roberts played in Mame Biram Diouf and the Senegalese striker, on loan from Manchester United, looped the ball over Jaaskelainen via a deflection.

Allardyce celebrated as if his side had claimed all three points - but as it turned out they would end with none.

Straight from the kick-off, Sam Ricketts played a long ball forward for Kevin Davies to nod into the path of Holden.

The American, back from two games out with a thigh injury, controlled neatly before beating Robinson with an outstanding finish from 20 yards to send the home crowd into raptures.
