Stoke   0 - 1   Blackpool

DJ Campbell
Campbell nets his third league goal of the season to take all three points

By Mike Henson

DJ Campbell's predatory strike helped Blackpool secure their fourth away win of the season as Stoke's late charge failed to steal a share of the points.

Stoke's Ricardo Fuller hit the bar early on, but Elliott Grandin also went close for the visitors.

Campbell poked home Charlie Adam's shot at the start of the second half before Matthew Etherington's free-kick struck the woodwork for the hosts.

Ian Evatt cleared off the line as Stoke piled forward but Blackpool survived.

The Seasiders, who had not played in the fortnight since suffering a late equaliser at Bolton, avoided a similar fate here as Stoke's five-match unbeaten run came to an end.

But the visitors initially looked sluggish for their weather-enforced lay-off.

Kenwyne Jones' physicality caused Blackpool's rearguard some early nervous moments as he twice came close to flicking headers into Fuller's path.

The two combined to fashion Stoke's first shot on goal as Jones cushioned down Rory Delap's long cross only to see his strike-partner's fierce half-volley blocked by Craig Cathcart.

Jones continued to threaten - with a header and scuffing a shot wide - and was left exasperated as Etherington failed to pick him out on a swift counter-attack.

Blackpool struggled to muster such attacking threat, but came closest to opening the scoring as Andy Wilkinson's last-ditch intervention proved just enough to deny Luke Varney before Campbell hooked a volley wide.

Neil Eardley's long-range shot, which endangered the top tier of the stand rather than Stoke's net, was more representative of their early efforts however as they struggled to secure the possession to feed their passing game.

But a tight offside decision went against the visitors as Campbell bore down on Asmir Begovic's goal from Varney's through-ball before the hosts were also left ruing the fine margins.

Afforded time on the edge of the box, Fuller stroked a curling effort past a rooted Seasiders' goalkeeper Richard Kingson but was only rewarded with a shuddering bar as the scoreline remained blank.

Blackpool's forward raids become more frequent as half-time approached however and Grandin had a glimpse of goal from Adam's free-kick before the chance was snuffed out by a decisive Begovic.

At the end of the first half Stoke did have the ball in the net but the referee had already blown for a foul on Kingson by Huth.

Blackpool were less pleased by another of Anthony Taylor's final decisions before the break as the Manchester official issued Adam with his fifth yellow card of the season, triggering a one-match ban for the playmaker.

The hosts began the second half strongly but Blackpool took the lead in the 48th minute when Whitehead's wayward shot and Fuller's lack of conviction saw Blackpool counter-attack through Varney and Adam and Campbell pounce from close range for his third goal of the season.

Pulis blames missed chances for defeat

Adam failed to connect properly with Varney's cut back but Campbell, a key figure in Blackpool's promotion from the Championship, flicked out a foot ahead of Huth to divert past Begovic.

Seventeen of Stoke's 21 league goals this season have come in the second half and the crowd raised the volume to spur their side to a customary late charge.

The response was slow at first with Fuller dragging an ugly shot well wide of the near post and the visitors refusing to be penned back.

Indeed Gary Taylor-Fletcher came close to shoring up their advantage with a powerful far-post header against the bar from Adam's deep cross.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis shuffled his side, bringing on Jon Walters and Tuncay, to try and regain the momentum and the changes seemed justified as Blackpool were immediately forced onto the back foot.

Etherington's fading free-kick glanced the bar before Kingson pawed away a point-blank header from Huth.

Blackpool still refused to sit back and substitute Matt Phillips forced Begovic into a frantic backpedal to deal with with a scooped shot from an acute angle.

But the match ended with the ball criss-crossing the face of the Blackpool goal as first Vaughan's flicked clearance narrowly evaded the attackers and Tuncay's more deliberate cross went unconverted.

In stoppage time Rory Delap's effort was repelled by Evatt on the post as Blackpool, unlike at the Reebok, refused to loosen their grip on the three points.
