Bolton   5 - 1   Newcastle

Johan Elmander celebrates his first goal with his team-mates
Elmander celebrates his first goal with his team-mates

By Saj Chowdhury

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies both struck twice to help Bolton to a superb win over Newcastle.

Davies opened the scoring from the spot after Kevin Nolan handled before Chung-Yong Lee swept in for 2-0.

Elmander then rounded Tim Krul to score his opener before Andy Carroll reduced the deficit with a low drive.

Elmander poked in and Davies scored his second penalty against a Newcastle side who had Fabricio Coloccini sent off for elbowing Elmander.

The late fifth took Bolton up to fourth in the Premier League and a Champions League spot.

And having lost only one league game in 10 and outclassed a potent Newcastle, Owen Coyle's men are fully deserving of their placing.

Elmander deserves credit - Coyle

In contrast, Newcastle have won only one of their last four, that victory coming at Arsenal two weeks ago.

On that day their defence was disciplined and resolute but against Bolton they were reminiscent of the panicked backline of their relegation season, two years ago.

The alarms rang in the 18th minute when both Jose Enrique and Coloccini failed to clear under pressure from Lee in the left-corner before the ball fell to Bolton old-boy Nolan who handled in his attempt to ease the pressure. There were no complaints from the Magpies skipper.

Davies, who lost his place to Carroll in the England squad that faced France in midweek, sent Krul the wrong way with his accurate spot-kick.

For the majority of the first half, Chris Hughton's men opted not to deliver the tried-and-trusted diagonal balls into Carroll and instead tried to get behind the Bolton defence.

Scoreline doesn't reflect match - Hughton

The tactic almost paid off but both Danny Guthrie and Enrique's fizzed balls across the six-yard area eluded their team-mates.

Those missed opportunities were punished by brilliant Bolton.

Coyle's men harried and hassled Newcastle without respite during the match and were rewarded again for their pressure shortly before the break.

Matt Taylor's free-kick rebounded off the bar and eventually fell at the feet of Danny Simpson, whose clearance bounced off a Bolton player and into the path of Lee in the box who calmly slipped the ball past Krul.

The South Korea goalscorer has been exceptional this season as has Elmander who added a third and his seventh of the campaign after the restart.

The Swede, who endured a ninth-month goal drought between December 2008 and September 2009, has leapt into life this season.

His sureness of touch which dazzled the Wolves defence last season was again evident when he was played in by Davies, rounded Krul and tapped in.

606: DEBATE

Moments later Carroll, who still looked fresh despite his exertions for England in midweek, pulled one back for the visiting side when he fired in an angled drive.

But Elmander restored the three-goal cushion with his eighth this campaign when he outmuscled a hapless Coloccini and raced into the area before beating the onrushing Dutch Magpies keeper.

And shortly after, the Argentine, who was not having one of his better days, was shown a straight red by referee Howard Webb for elbowing the Swedish striker.

To complete a miserable day for the Magpies defence, Spaniard Enrique tripped Davies in the area who picked himself up to fire in his second penalty, in the closing seconds.
