Simon Cox brings down Dean Whitehead for Stoke's second penalty
By Stephan Shemilt
Substitute Jon Walters scored twice as Stoke recorded their third successive Premier League victory and extended West Brom's winless run to five games.
After a first half of little goalmouth action, Matthew Etherington opened the scoring from the spot after Scott Carson felled Kenwyne Jones.
The Baggies pressed but Walters' spot-kick doubled Stoke's lead following Simon Cox's foul on Dean Whitehead.
And Walters wrapped it up by firing in a rebound after being fed by Jones.
The win takes Tony Pulis's side to eighth in the Premier League table and sees them record three consecutive victories in the top flight for the first time since the 1983/84 season.
Di Matteo queries Stoke penalties
After their promising start to this campaign, West Brom have now dropped from fourth to 14th and manager Roberto Di Matteo will be lamenting his side's inability to capitalise on their dominance of Stoke in a poor first half.
The hosts threatened to open the scoring with their first attack, but Peter Odemwingie's shot was blocked by Ryan Shawcross. However, the opening action betrayed the dour nature of the rest of the first period.
Stoke's plans were derailed when they lost Jermaine Pennant to injury 10 minutes in. The former Liverpool winger gathered Etherington's cross at the far post and blazed over, slipping in the process and damaging his right hamstring.
From then on West Brom took control, but were mainly restricted to half-chances.
Three times in quick succession, Giles Barnes crossed from the right only for the ball to evade all in an Albion shirt, while Odemwingie curled a free-kick over the bar and offered a tame effort after evading no fewer than four challenges.
The away fans did their best to rouse the Potters, with the Albion fans easily drowned out by those in the away end, but the half-time whistle came as blessed relief to all watching.
However, the travelling Stoke supporters were rewarded as their side took charge after the interval.
After Jones was fed by Ricardo Fuller, the former Sunderland man was needlessly brought down by Carson, who unwisely rushed to the edge of his area and spoiled the occasion of his 100th game for the Baggies. Etherington despatched the resulting penalty low into the right corner.
West Brom went looking for an equaliser with substitute Somen Tchoyi forcing a good save from Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, but after that Albion lacked urgency and were restricted to long-range efforts.
Pulis pleased with 'massive' win
They were punished by a double from Walters, who had entered the action as a replacement for Etherington.
First, Walters sent Carson the wrong way from the spot after Cox was penalised for stepping across Whitehead with little intention to play the ball.
Then, after a clever ball from the byeline by Jones, Walters saw his effort saved but kept his composure to fire the rebound high into the net.
