Jermaine Beckford (l) is congratulated by Sylvain Distin after scoring Everton's late equaliser
By Les Roopanarine
Jermaine Beckford rescued a late point for 10-man Everton to stretch their unbeaten league run to seven games and deny Bolton a seemingly certain win.
A 79th-minute strike from Ivan Klasnic, who converted a far-post cross from Matt Taylor, looked to have settled the game against the run of play.
Marouane Fellaini's frustration boiled over soon afterwards, earning him a straight red card for violent conduct.
But Beckford curled in for Everton in injury time to claim an unlikely point.
Bolton have not won on Merseyside for five years, but if Beckford's late intervention left them reeling, it was the least Everton deserved from a contest they dominated virtually from start to finish.
Even so, home manager David Moyes is unlikely to take much comfort from another performance in which his side, unable to break down opponents who have not kept a clean sheet since the opening day of the season, again flattered to deceive.
A tendency to marry promising approach play with poor finishing has been a source of mounting dismay to Moyes, and nothing the Scot saw against Bolton will have allayed his concerns.
Moyes admits Beckford mistakes
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Louis Saha and Fellaini were serial squanderers of half-chances over the course of the evening, and Everton were also woefully poor from corners, winning a total of 15 yet barely threatening from one.
Fatalists might argue that Moyes has simply become the latest victim of the manager-of-the-month curse, but if malevolent forces were at work, they were entirely of the home side's own making.
Even Fellaini's surprise return from his recent hamstring injury was overshadowed, the Belgian's dismissal - for kicking out at Paul Robinson after he was fouled by the Bolton full-back five minutes from time - earning him an inevitable suspension.
His absence will be keenly felt. Despite his lack of recent playing time, Fellaini was Everton's best performer on an evening when Bolton were up against it almost from the first whistle.
Bilyaletdinov sliced an early Fellaini knockdown wide before failing to reach a far-post cross from Baines, Louis Saha blazed over, and, cementing the developing tone, some neat footwork from Phil Neville on the edge of the area came to nothing.
Moyes' preference for Saha, who has not scored in the Premier League since February, over Yakubu, the only Everton striker with a goal to his name this season, seemed odd under the circumstances, but the Frenchman went closer than most.
A low drive from just inside the area bounced off Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, obliging the big Finland international to repel Tim Cahill's follow-up, while an angled header from Mikel Arteta's corner was cleared off the line by Chung-Yong Lee.
Moyes recently made a training-ground entreaty to his players to score more from corners and, with more match time, Fellaini might have done better than send a thumping volley over late in the half.
Though their own ambitions were limited by Everton's territorial dominance, Bolton, who won so impressively against Tottenham at the weekend, occasionally carved out opportunities of their own.
Coyle proud despite draw
Taylor shuddered the bar with a header from Stuart Holden's second-half corner, but the visitors also had chances early in each half.
Johan Elmander nutmegged his marker early in the game to open a path to goal, but the Sweden international was denied by the alert Sylvain Distin, who reacted quickly to snuff out the danger.
Shortly after the break, Holden came close to scoring his first goal for the club since his January arrival from Houston Dynamo, heading Taylor's corner goalwards only to be denied by the outstanding reflexes of keeper Tim Howard.
There was nothing Howard could do to prevent Klasnic, on bail following an allegation of rape, converting Taylor's cross 11 minutes from time, but Bolton might have known there would be more in the game.
Undone by Liverpool's Maxi Rodriguez with four minutes remaining at Anfield 11 days ago, Bolton's Merseyside misery came even later this time, Beckford pouncing with seconds left to salvage a point.
Everton manager David Moyes:
"Anyone who has watched Leeds United over the last few seasons will tell you Jermaine Beckford can score an array of goals.
"It was a fantastic finish, it really was. I think that is what Jermaine has got but there is a lot he will have to learn in being a Premier League player.
"I put him in a bit earlier than I should have done. I shouldn't have started him so early, that was a mistake of mine, but it was a good goal.
"The one thing we can't teach him is the one thing he came with, the ability to score goals.
"I've no complaints [about Fellaini's dismissal], it was retaliation. He shouldn't do it, he was stupid.
Bolton manager Owen Coyle:
"If someone had offered me four points from two games against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton I would obviously have taken them with both hands.
"I am disappointed because we were in a great position to win the game - but that is the only disappointment.
"I felt my group of players were terrific tonight. Every one of them had to stand up to be counted.
"Goodison Park is one of the toughest venues in the Barclays Premier League and during the game we had to withstand periods of pressure."
