Wolverhampton   2 - 1   Man City

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy and Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini
McCarthy celebrates but it was a bad day at the office for Mancini

By Saj Chowdhury

David Edwards's second-half strike handed struggling Wolves a surprise win against fourth-placed Manchester City.

Emmanuel Adebayor gave City a first-half lead from the spot after Richard Stearman had brought down David Silva.

But moments later, Nenad Milijas beat goalkeeper Joe Hart with a low, 20-yard drive to put Wolves level.

And the home side grabbed what proved to be the winner after the break when David Edwards pounced to slide in after Kevin Doyle's shot have been parried.

Despite victory - their first in the league since the opening day win against Stoke - Wolves remain in the bottom three of the table.

But Mick McCarthy's side will have been boosted by the manner of their success.

606: DEBATE

Many might have expected a tough physical battle between two teams who have been somewhat dogged by negative headlines for a few instances of poor tackling this season.

Instead, the crowd were treated to a fantastic display of attacking football from both sides.

City were the better team in the first quarter of the match and before the opener had twice tested Wolves with two beautiful crosses from the right into the six-yard area - the second cleared by Kevin Foley, denying the sprightly Mario Balotelli.

Wolves did crack under the City pressure midway through the half when Stearman conceded a penalty after coming in with unnecessary force to bring down Silva. Adebayor coolly placed the ball to Hahnemann's left to make it 1-0.

Mancini apologises for Man City performance

But the lead lasted for only for seven minutes.

The fantastic Matt Jarvis, who led most of Wolves' attacking forays, delivered a brilliant ball from the left which was half-cleared to Milijas at the edge of the area. The 27-year-old Serbia international drove his effort past Hart, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out of the bottom left corner.

McCarthy's side had tested league leaders Chelsea last week but came away from Stamford Bridge without a point. This week it was clear they were intent on not letting their good work go to waste.

And 10 minutes after the break, they took the lead when Edwards, who went close with two headers in the first half, placed his eight-yard effort past Hart.

City were rocked and boss Roberto Mancini brought on Adam Johnson for the last 20 minutes.

The former Middlesbrough player came close to making an immediate impact when he delivered a low cross to Adebayor who, from 12 yards, should have scored but instead scooped his shot over the bar.

McCarthy refuses to get carried away with win

Strangely for such a potent side, that was City's best chance in the closing stages with Wolves blocking subsequent lofted balls into the area as the away side resorted to desperate measures.

When the whistle blew there was delight and relief among the Wolves players and fans but glum faces among the City contingent whose title aspirations were handed a massive blow.
