Newcastle   2 - 2   Wigan

Wigan goalscorer Charles N'Zogbia
Wigan goalscorer N'Zogbia celebrates his second goal against his ex-club

By Saj Chowdhury

Newcastle fought back from 2-0 down to draw with Wigan thanks to Fabricio Coloccini's last-gasp header.

Ex-Magpie Charles N'Zogbia scored two goals in two minutes in the first-half, his first a header and then a powerful finish from Franco Di Santo's crosses.

Substitute Shola Ameobi then reduced the deficit, with a diving header from Jonas Gutierrez's ball from the left.

And in the final minute of stoppage time, Gutierrez provided for Argentine team-mate Coloccini to power in.

It was an extraordinary finish to a match which Wigan deserved to win.

Up to that point the visitors' disciplined approach had frustrated a Newcastle side devoid of guile as a result of the absence of rested captain Kevin Nolan and injured Hatem Ben Arfa.

606: DEBATE

That lack of craft was evident in the first 20 minutes, with Chris Hughton's men controlling the match.

However, they created only one clear chance when Jose Enrique's cross from the left was brilliantly smothered by keeper Ali Al Habsi at the feet of the goal-hungry Andy Carroll.

What came next was an incredible implosion on the part of Newcastle.

N'Zogbia, whose touches had been met with unsurprising jeers, inexplicably eased his 5ft 7in frame above 6ft 4in Mike Williamson to head past Tim Krul from Di Santo's right-wing cross.

Newcastle character pleases Hughton

A minute later Di Santo again found the Frenchman, who eluded Williamson once more before smashing past the Dutch keeper.

As predictable as Newcastle were, Wigan worked extremely hard in closing down most threats in their half.

However, what the Magpies lacked in invention they made up with height and muscle up front.

And with 20 minutes remaining, grafter Gutierrez delivered from the right for Ameobi to power in from close range and halve their deficit.

The Geordie striker had not been on for long but his introduction and goal gave lifeless Newcastle a much-needed adrenalin shot.

Martinez frustrated after conceding late goal

Moments later Carroll, who had replaced Ameobi in attack, then went agonisingly close with two headers.

With referee Mark Halsey now checking his watch it seemed like Newcastle were set to stumble to their third successive home loss.

But with seconds remaining, stand-in skipper Coloccini fulfilled his responsibilities with an imperious leap at the far post to earn Newcastle an unlikely point.

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton:
"What we have got in this side is great character, that I am aware of.

"We know we are in a tougher division, but this is somewhere that became very much a fortress for us last season.

"The only way to get back to anywhere near that is to draw out results in whichever way we have to."

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez:
"We did all the things we had to do to stop Newcastle from having an impact in the match," said the Wigan manager.

"All we had to do in the end was defend a corner, but we weren't focused enough to see it through.

"The players are left with a feeling that they didn't deserve to come away from St James's Park without a win."
