Carlos Tevez
Tevez celebrates scoring against Blackpool

By Ian Hughes

Manchester City moved up to second in the table after Carlos Tevez scored twice to help them overcome Blackpool.

The Argentine flicked in David Silva's low cross to open the scoring although he appeared to be offside.

Marlon Harewood's brilliant glancing header gave Blackpool a deserved equaliser but seconds later Tevez made it 2-1 with a low, deflected shot.

David Silva scored City's third with a superb solo effort before Gary Taylor-Fletcher struck a late consolation.

The result may appear harsh on Blackpool, who dominated for long spells, particularly as they were on the wrong of at least one offside decision.

But they must accept that poor finishing in the first half and DJ Campbell's failure to take a gilt-edged opportunity after the break also had a part to play.

Important away win pleases Mancini

For City, they will take heart that they have picked up another three points, and applied pressure on leaders Chelsea, without playing anywhere near their best.

However, it took an inspired substitution - Silva's introduction changed the game - and a poor refereeing decision to help them on their way.

While City boss Roberto Mancini will be pleased with his side's durability, his opposite number Ian Holloway will wonder what his side have to do to add to their single point won at home in the league this season.

Especially as Blackpool displayed all the right qualities as they pursued that elusive first home win.

From the start, Blackpool quickly established dominance, although City's Adam Johnson was the first to have a decent effort on goal, when he forced Matthew Gilkes to tip over a rising drive.

Quick, incisive passing and composure on the ball - with Charlie Adam involved in most of the best moves - kept Blackpool moving forward and City on the back foot.

Yet visiting keeper Joe Hart was not tested in the first half as time and again Blackpool fired efforts off target as their finishing failed to match their build-up play.

Adam, Luke Varney and Taylor-Fletcher all shot wide, while Campbell also failed to apply accuracy to a free header.

Perhaps City, despite their obvious lack of fluency, had the better chances in the opening 45 minutes - although that did little to ease manager Roberto Mancini's agitated manner.

Knowing that his side would establish a three-point cushion in second place with a victory - and in doing so boost their title credentials - it was unsurprising that the Italian was unhappy.

Watching Tevez fail to nod home when six yards out would not have helped his mood.

In contrast, Holloway would have enjoyed his view of the match - albeit from the stands as he served a one-match touchline ban.

His influence was all over the pitch, typified by an earlier moment when the pacey Varney almost blocked Hart's clearance after he had chased down a backpass.

However, Holloway's men would have found themselves a goal down at half-time had the largely anonymous Emmanuel Adebayor connected with James Milner's low cross.

Holloway calls for use of video technology

Adebayor made way for Spaniard Silva on 66 minutes as Mancini tried to change the pattern of the game.

It proved to be a stroke of genius as Silva immediately set up Tevez, who steered the ball in with a brilliant flick and was controversially ruled onside to allow the goal to stand.

The strike came at an awful moment for Blackpool as they really should been the side to take the lead. They squandered a great chance when an unmarked Campbell rolled the ball wide of the goal from six yards out after being picked out by Varney and Taylor-Fletcher had a goal ruled out for offside when it appeared he was not.

It almost got worse for the hosts when Milner's vicious shot came crashing back off the bar.

But Blackpool dug deep and levelled when Harewood produced a delightful headed flick to convert Adams' free-kick.

The celebrations lasted no time at all though, as Tevez immediately restored City's lead - but again there was an element of doubt about the goal.

Blackpool felt Ian Evatt was fouled before Tevez lashed in a shot from outside the box that diverted home off the foot of Craig Cathcart.

Tevez then came close to getting his hat-trick when he smashed a shot against the bar with three minutes to go, while Silva also fired an effort against the post shortly after.

Silva, though, was not to be denied and he capped his excellent cameo when he twisted two defenders inside out before curling a precise shot into the far corner.

There was still time for Blackpool to pull a goal back, Taylor-Fletcher cracking in a low shot from a well-worked corner, but it came too late to change the result.
