Wigan   2 - 0   Wolverhampton

Karl Henry's challenge on Jordi Gomez
Karl Henry's challenge on Jordi Gomez led to a straight red card

By Oliver Brett

Wigan made hard work of their first home win of the season after playing all but the first 10 minutes of the match with a one-man advantage.

Wolves fell to their fourth league loss in a row after Karl Henry was sent off for a reckless tackle on Jordi Gomez.

And it was Gomez, crashing a free-kick off the underside of the crossbar, who finally made Wigan's pressure pay.

The Latics made sure when Christophe Berra steered a clearance into the path of Hugo Rodallega to score a second.

Wolves have already faced criticism this season for their committed style of play, but the decision by referee Lee Mason to send off Henry looked a good one.

The Wolves midfielder was always going to be the second man to arrive at a loose ball which Gomez had taken in his stride when poleaxed by Henry's challenge.

With Wolves forced into a purely defensive mindset, Wigan predictably began to enjoy a significant quantity of possession and passed the ball around confidently.

But for the remainder of the first half they barely created a single genuine opportunity, as the lone Wolves striker Kevin Doyle was frequently called back to assist with the two banks of four already set up to defend.

After brief treatment Gomez was able to resume, but much of the cut-and-thrust provided by Wigan was from Charles N'Zogbia, appearing on either flank.

Di Santo was unable to get on the end of N'Zogbia's cross along the six-yard line, and the Latics were largely restricted to long-range shots, with Rodallega among those to test Marcus Hahnemann.

The game was not entirely played in front of the Wolves goal. A rare attack from the visitors earned a corner on the left, and Matt Jarvis's delivery resulted in a scramble in the box that was only ended when Steven Fletcher picked up a yellow card for catching Franco Di Santo.

The only other opportunity for the visitors had come when Fletcher had hit a free-kick off-target.

Di Santo then saw an effort deflected behind at the other end as half-time approached and a cross from N'Zogbia was headed just past the post by Gomez as the frustration grew for the home fans.

Wigan played with more poise in the second half. A delightful move started by Gomez forced a good save by Hahnemann to deny Di Santo, though the Argentine, who was involved in a brilliant dummy earlier in the build-up, must have been disappointed not to produce a finish with more sting in it.

Finally deliverance came when David Edwards was adjudged to have fouled N'Zogbia on the very edge of the box. Gomez clipped the free-kick over the wall and there was nothing Hahnemann could do to reach it as it bounced into the goalmouth via the bar.

Hahnemann was called on to make more saves as Wigan pushed forward looking for a second. And they got it when N'Zogbia played in Rodallega with a perfectly-weighted pass. Berra reacted quickly, only to find the ball sliding off the Wigan player's feet and into the Wolves goal.
