Gardner was shown a straight red after scything down Di Santo
By James Standley
Birmingham City extended the longest unbeaten home record in the top flight to one day short of a year as they fought out a goalless draw with Wigan.
Wigan's Hugo Rodallega and City's Roger Johnson were booked after a flare-up before Johnson and Cameron Jerome came close to giving the hosts the lead.
Jerome was denied by Ali Al Habsi in the best chance of the second half.
Birmingham's Craig Gardner was sent off for going over the top as he tried to tackle Franco Di Santo late on.
There was plenty of endeavour but little cutting edge from either side at St Andrew's, although Wigan will be delighted with a point that lifts them out of the bottom three.
Unbeaten home record delights McLeish
And despite the result meaning Birmingham equal the club record of 18 successive home games unbeaten, they have now won only two of their last 16 Premier League matches.
The hosts handed Alexander Hleb, on a season-long loan from Barcelona, his home Premier League debut and the Belarus international could have opened the scoring inside two minutes.
However, Hleb, who scored his first Blues goal against Milton Keynes Dons in the Carling Cup in midweek, dragged his volley wide of the far post.
Wigan soon crafted a chance of their own after the lively Charles N'Zogbia escaped down the left, but from his pull-back Scott Dann flung himself in the way of Rodallega's shot.
It was always likely to be an uncomfortable afternoon for N'Zogbia, who turned down a move to Birmingham just before the transfer window closed at the end of August, and every time the Wigan winger touched the ball he was roundly abused by the home fans.
Unfortunately for the Blues faithful he was being granted the freedom of the city down the Birmingham right and he twice tried his luck from distance, stinging the hands of goalkeeper Ben Foster with his second effort.
The visitors were looking the more likely scorers but Birmingham began to get a grip midway through the half and Jerome twice tried his luck, to no effect, with headers for the hosts.
As the half wore on the match settled into a stalemate and when Rodallega and Johnson suddenly clashed it came out of the blue.
Colombia international striker Rodallega was the worst offender, appearing to push his face into the Birmingham defender's after the pair squared up following an aerial challenge.
And when referee Mark Clattenburg decided to caution both players, an aggrieved Johnson was none too impressed.
The incident woke the hosts up and they twice went close to breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time.
Martinez happy with battling draw
First a fired-up Johnson looped a header just past the post, before Jerome was hauled down by Steve Gohouri just outside the area in the dying seconds of the half.
Wigan keeper Al Habsi spilled Larsson's free-kick at the feet of Jerome but managed to recover in time to prevent the Birmingham striker forcing the ball home.
The second half was initially a livelier affair but once again there was more effort than end product on display.
Maynor Figueroa rifled a shot wide for Wigan before Liam Ridgewell headed wide at the other end, and Foster saved low down after N'Zogbia tried his luck.
The best chance of the half fell to Jerome, who was put through one-on-one with Al Habsi, but the Latics keeper kept his nerve to deny the Birmingham striker.
The hosts brought on Kevin Phillips for Jerome with less than 15 minutes left but it was Wigan who went closest to scoring, Rodallega producing a sweet shot on the turn but finding the alert Foster equal to it.
The home side ended with 10 men after Gardner went over the top as he slid in on Di Santo - who had to be replaced as a result of the challenge - and Clattenburg had no hesitation in showing a straight red card.
Ben Watson forced a low save from Foster with the resulting free-kick, but a draw was a fair result.
Birmingham boss Alex McLeish: "The unbeaten record is a phenomenal achievement, a great credit to everybody at the club, but the players are the guys who have to go out there and do it and they deserve a pat on the back.
"Wigan were a handful. We probably had the best of the chances but had to be on our toes for their quick movement up front, they gave us some problems but our two centre backs were immense.
"Gardner's studs were a little high and nowadays when your studs show and you make contact it usually results in red card. A couple of years ago maybe it would have been a booking, but I don't think we will be appealing."
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez: "I am satisfied with the result. We knew we had to restrict Birmingham and go with their threat because they have developed a way to win games and at home are very successful.
"Our concentration was there at all times and I felt we had our moments, we had more corners and attempts than the home side which is pleasing - it is a very difficult place to come and I'm very pleased with the performance.
"Gardner really caught Di Santos's leg and it is a worry to see what the extent of the injury is."
