West Brom   3 - 1   Birmingham

West Brom draw level after Scott Dann's own goal
Dann's own goal set up West Brom's impressive comeback in the second half

By Mark Ashenden

West Brom struck three times in the second half to inflict a surprise first defeat of the season on Birmingham.

Blues dominated the first period and bagged the opener when Cameron Jerome volleyed in Scott Dann's header.

Back came the Baggies after the break and drew level when Dann deflected Jerome Thomas's shot into his own net.

West Brom poured forward and took the lead with Peter Odemwingie rounding Ben Foster to fire in, before Jonas Olsson bravely nodded in Chris Brunt's corner.

Roberto Di Matteo praised his West Brom team's spirit which has followed the 6-0 drubbing by Chelsea in the season's opener, but it could be his half-time words on Saturday that prove to be a major turning point in their campaign.

Di Matteo pleased with second half turnaround

With only three Premier League successes in 20 matches before this derby, Di Matteo would have probably settled for a point against a team 11 places above them at the start of the day.

But despite conceding an early Blues goal, the introduction of Graeme Dorrans for the second period beefed up the hosts' midfield and the team were richly rewarded to propel them up into ninth spot.

After Nigerian Odemwingie wasted a great chance on 13 minutes, Di Matteo's men got off to the worst possible start when they conceded in the very next attack.

Gabriel Tamas was caught tugging Jerome's shirt and as new on-loan signing Alexander Hleb drifted the free-kick on to the head of Dann, the ball looped over to the back post for Jerome to volley in from two feet for his first of the season.

Apart from a few nice touches by Odemwingie and a Brunt long-range shot, the hosts were showing few signs of getting back into this battle - the first top-flight meeting between these clubs for four years.

But Birmingham dropped off the pace and West Brom, accepting the invitation to drive forward with relish, almost drew level with the last two attacks of the half.

Gonzalo Jara crossed for Marc-Antoine Fortune to nod narrowly wide as Foster scrambled along the line, and with Blues boss Alex McLeish looking on bemused, his sleepy defenders allowed the unmarked Tamas to head a Brunt corner just wide.

The relief among the Birmingham players at half-time would have been replaced by complete shock within 15 minutes of the restart as they saw their lead swiftly turned into a deficit.

Thanks to the introduction of Dorrans, back after a family bereavement, West Brom continued to drive at the Blues defence and were rewarded with an equaliser on 51 minutes, albeit thanks to a slice of luck.

McLeish blames 'human error' for defeat

Thomas burst past Stephen Carr on the left side and as his low shot skimmed towards the boot of Odemwingie, the ball few into the net off the helpless Dann.

The Baggies sensed an upset and a Lee Bowyer error on the edge of the box led to Odemwingie slipping the ball around Foster to blast home to send the home fans into raptures.

And things got even better as Olsson leapt above the Birmingham defence to head home Brunt's inswinging corner.

Birmingham were left in disarray as McLeish was forced into substituting Bowyer, lucky to still be on the pitch after a reckless tackle on Tamas.

Not the greatest of days for a manager who signed a new three-year contract before kick-off.

West Brom manager Roberto di Matteo:

"We made the change at half-time [Graeme Dorrans in place of striker Marc-Antoine Fortune and Peter Odemwingie going up front] and we were very positive in the second half and it was vital to get the equaliser. We had to get a hold of the midfield.

"The win is great for us. It puts us into a good position to kick on. The performance was excellent."

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish:

"It's very disappointing. It's a tale of two halves.

"We were excellent in the first half. Roberto changed the shape and we had to be ready for that and take a hold of the game but the early goal gave them a massive lift

"Human error was what went wrong - the guy getting inside Stephen Carr. The second one just bounced unfortunately off Lee Bowyer."
