Hatem Ben Arfa scored with a superb long-range strike in the opening half

Hatem Ben Arfa's stunning strike gave Newcastle their first win at Goodison Park in nine years and left Everton rooted in the bottom three and still without a Premier League win this season.
Ben Arfa, making his first Newcastle start after signing on loan from Marseille, scored with a spectacular 25-yard drive on the stroke of half-time as Chris Hughton's side bounced back in style from their shock home defeat by Blackpool.
Newcastle also survived the loss of goalkeeper Steve Harper in the first-half after he sustained a shoulder injury in a challenge with Jermaine Beckford.
Everton almost snatched a point their performance did not deserve when substitute Yakubu hit the post in stoppage time, but there was to be no repeat of the late recovery that earned them a point against Manchester United last Saturday.
Newcastle team effort pleases Hughton
And as Everton continue to languish near the bottom of the table after so much pre-season optimism, the home fans vented their full fury on their struggling side at the final whistle.
Newcastle's celebrations were in stark contrast with Ben Arfa, also linked with Everton in the summer, making himself an instant hero as he produced the moment of inspiration that proved to be the difference between the sides.
Everton were forced to replace injured Tim Cahill with Beckford but the striker's only significant contribution in 45 minutes of struggle was a challenge on Harper that saw the keeper stretchered off.
Newcastle, who also gave a debut to Ivory Coast international Cheik Tiote, were the more assured side as Everton struggled to capture the fluency they displayed in patches in the draw with Manchester United.
Hughton's side signalled their intent as Wayne Routledge headed off target early on, while Everton keeper Tim Howard was also forced to palm away Joey Barton's free-kick.
Nolan excited by 'top player' Ben Arfa
Everton's response was a header from Phil Jagielka that drifted narrowly wide and a tame finish from Leon Osman that was easily saved by Tim Krul, on for the injured Harper.
Ben Arfa had already produced a moment of brilliance that almost created a chance for Andy Carroll - but he delivered a taste of what once made him one of European football's hottest properties to give Newcastle a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time, unleashing a rising drive that flew into the roof of the net past a startled Howard.
Everton boss David Moyes needed to inject life into his side, and he responded by replacing Beckford and Tony Hibbert with Yakubu and Seamus Coleman.
It produced a reaction with an increase in tempo, but not in quality as Everton's play lacked composure.
Moyes frustrated with start to season
Indeed, it was Newcastle who felt they should have had the opportunity to extend their lead with 15 minutes left, but referee Andre Marriner ignored their vehement penalty appeals and ruled that Coleman got a touch on the ball as he challenged Kevin Nolan in the area.
Everton staged a late rally of sorts, with Yakubu hitting a post and Marouane Fellaini being denied by Fabricio Coloccini's superb challenge in stoppage time, but Newcastle held on for three deserved win.
For Everton and boss Moyes, they are left to ponder their worst Premier League start in 16 years.
