Bolton   2 - 2   Birmingham

Roger Johnson and Kevin Davies
Central defender Johnson opened the scoring with his first goal for Birmingham

By Chris Whyatt

Bolton's 10 men battled back to deny a classier Birmingham side victory in a feisty affair at the Reebok Stadium.

The visitors took the lead after just three minutes when Roger Johnson slid home after a great move down the left.

Trotters keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off for a needless slap on Johnson just before half-time, after which Craig Gardner prodded home a second.

But Kevin Davies coolly converted a penalty before substitute Robbie Blake fired in a brilliant late free-kick.

Cameron Jerome could have given Birmingham manager Alex McLeish's visitors a dramatic late winner, but Bolton's substitute goalkeeper Adam Bogdan saved well at the striker's feet to ensure both sides remain unbeaten this season after four league and cup games apiece.

Draw feels like a defeat - McLeish

Neither club has quite had a flying start to the new campaign but, in the home side's fighting spirit and Birmingham's flickers of poise and invention, there are positive signs for both teams who find themselves in the upper echelons of the table.

Before those in the ground had even settled down in their seats, the Blues stamped a moment of class on a game which typified the Premier League's frenetic style.

After three minutes the mercurial James McFadden - who appeared to be struggling with a slight groin strain - zipped a classy reverse pass into the path of Lee Bowyer, who had timed his run to the left byeline to perfection.

Bowyer put a quick low ball across Bolton's six yard box and with Jerome holding off the home defenders to help it along, the onrushing Johnson slid home from eight yards for his first goal in Birmingham colours.

That put McLeish's men in a confident frame of mind going forward, but right-back Stephen Carr was not so sharp - he made a glaring mistake but former Manchester City winger Martin Petrov failed to capitalise as the Irishman recovered to block the Bulgarian's weak shot.

Davies, playing in his 250th league game for the Trotters, then laid off typically for Petrov who at least managed to force Blues keeper Ben Foster into a proper save.

Jerome's angry penalty appeal in the 20th minute looked laughable as he seemed to execute an air-shot with Gretar Steinsson lurking and the hosts started to press more successfully, with Stuart Holden whipping a decent free-kick towards goal which Foster had to tip over.

An increasingly scrappy phase of the game was punctured when Birmingham's Craig Gardner broke free in space down the right wing and took his time to stand up a well-measured cross for McFadden, but the Scotsman could only drive into Jaaskelainen's arms.

The game then briefly descended into farce when, seconds later, the home side's Finnish goalkeeper was given a straight red card after needlessly slapping Johnson in his face after the pair had competed innocently for a bouncing ball.

Johnson himself was booked for the original foul in an extended period of mayhem in which 10-man Bolton brought off a furious Petrov as substitute keeper Bogdan made his way onto the pitch for a Premier League debut.

Five minutes into the second period he was solemnly picking the ball out of the net.

Coyle hails 'terrific' Davies

Roaming free, McFadden crossed with his weaker right foot for Jerome - who Bolton claimed was offside but was clearly on - to nod back into the path of Gardner, who clumsily notched his third Premier League goal in two games from close range at the second attempt.

Battling Bolton, however, refused to cave in.

An immediately positive response came when Chung-Yong Lee fired a wickedly bouncing cross through for Johan Elmander but, with time to spare to compose a finish, he slashed at the ball to take the pace off it and allow Foster an easy save.

Despite being a man short, Bolton finally made their pressure tell in the 71st minute when Davies won a penalty with Johnson clambering over his back as the duo challenged for a high ball just inside the box.

Despite heated appeals referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot and, with Bowyer jabbering away cheekily in his ear, Davies side-footed the coolest of penalties into the top corner for the 100th league goal of his career.

Less than 10 minutes later the Trotters drew level in style.

Substitute Robbie Blake had replaced the misfiring Elmander and after lining up a 20-yard free-kick and with the clock ticking down, he curled the cleanly over the wall with textbook technique to send it directly into the roof of Foster's bulging net.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle:
"Jussi has made a mistake, he knows that.

"He is bitterly disappointed he has been sent off but it was a red card, there is no debate about that.

"Alex [McLeish] may have been disappointed with the penalty but last week at Upton Park a penalty was given against us.

"It was expertly finished by the skipper and then Robbie Blake's come up with a wonder finish in the top corner.

"I had two magnificent years at Burnley with Robbie. I would have loved to have got him earlier in his career."

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish:
"It feels like a defeat but in the grand scheme of things we believe it could be a good point.

"We are quite sore about it and the manner in which we lost the goals.

"The penalty I felt was extremely soft. It is a man's game, English football is passionate, fast, intense.

"If we are going to see penalties hopefully they are going to be consistent and see the way our guys get barged in the box.

"It would be good if [referee Kevin Friend] watched it and explained why there was a penalty and why there was a free-kick.

"But good for Bolton, good fighting spirit. They never gave up and we needed a third goal to put them away."
