Sunderland   2 - 2   Birmingham

Scott Dann celebrates after heading home Birmingham's first goal
Dann's header with 13 minutes left gave Birmingham hope on Saturday

By Chris Whyatt

Sunderland could not survive captain Lee Cattermole's first-half sending off as Birmingham mounted a battling late comeback at the Stadium of Light.

Darren Bent converted a dubious 22nd-minute penalty but Cattermole deserved to go after two yellow cards.

Birmingham full-back Stephen Carr looped a header into his own goal after half-time to put the hosts in control.

But Scott Dann headed in late on and Blues nicked an unlikely point through Liam Ridgewell's bundled equaliser.

Referee was out of his depth - Bruce

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce will be rueing his side's inability to hold firm after they looked far the more competent side on the opening day of the Premier League season.

But he may, ultimately, take more positives than opposite number Alex McLeish after Birmingham showed little but spirit in a competitive, bruising encounter between the two teams with the worst disciplinary records of last season.

The hosts came out of the traps quickly in bright north-east sunshine, with midfielder Jordan Henderson testing the early nerves of Birmingham's debutant goalkeeper Ben Foster with a decent long-range effort.

Bent then pushed a well-placed knock-back into the path of midfield team-mate Steed Malbranque, but he could only screw a close-range shot wide of goal when it looked a more simple task to hit the target.

With Birmingham disjointed, Cattermole issued an unnecessary statement of intent when he caught Gary O'Connor with his right elbow - a full-blooded aerial clash which left the Scottish striker with a nasty cut above his eye.

Cattermole escaped punishment for that and the visitors' luck then worsened as it appeared they had real cause for complaint when Sunderland's penalty was awarded.

Republic of Ireland international Carr did bring Fraizer Campbell down after a burst of speed from the on-rushing former Manchester United striker, but the challenge looked as if it might have come just outside the 18-yard box.

Regardless, referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot and Bent - who notched five penalties amid a glut of goals last season - coolly converted low to Foster's right.

The tough-tackling nature of the game was typified when three yellow cards were awarded in the space of five minutes, with Cattermole finally receiving his first for a clumsy challenge on Cameron Jerome.

McLeish demands Blues improvement

The hosts should have gone 2-0 up on the half hour but, after a brilliant interchange with strike partner Campbell, Bent - just 10 yards out and unmarked - could only stub his shot into the turf with the goal at his mercy.

Such were Birmingham's slumbers, Lee Bowyer nearly sliced into his own goal after 36 minutes but Foster managed to claw the ball away for a corner.

Just before half-time Cattermole was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card for clattering straight through Bowyer, without ceremony, from behind.

McLeish brought James McFadden on for Keith Fahey after the break and, although it helped Birmingham gain more possession of the ball, their quality when pressing was lacking.

Sunderland soon made them pay, going 2-0 up on 55 minutes when Birmingham full-back Carr looped a long-range header over Foster into his own net as he tried to clear a deep cross under strong pressure from Campbell.

Nikola Zigic - at 6ft 7½in he is competing with Tottenham's Peter Crouch to be the league's tallest player - came off the Birmingham bench to test Sunderland's debutant Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

And his immediate impact endured as Birmingham spent much more time on the offensive, launching long balls into the box for the £8m Serbia striker to attack.

Paraguayan international Cristian Riveros - another player to impress at this summer's World Cup - came on for Sunderland, and he nearly put the Black Cats out of sight with a lovely chip that drifted just inches wide of the post.

But when all looked lost for the Midlanders, Dann put Birmingham back into the game with his first ever Premier League goal as he rose above Nedum Onuoha to squirm a header through the legs of Mignolet.

Unmarked, Dann should then have levelled from Roger Johnson's dangerous free-kick as Sunderland clearly struggled to batten down the hatches without 11 men on the pitch.

But the task of equalising was left to a combination of Ridgewell and an assortment of panicked Sunderland defenders, who ensured the ball trickled agonisingly in with three minutes remaining after a goalmouth scramble ensued from Sebastian Larsson's expert free-kick.
