Euro coaches name Redondo the best
Redondo
Redondo got the better of Roy Keane and United
Argentina international Fernando Redondo has been named Uefa Champions League player of the year after impressive performances for winners Real Madrid in last season's tournament.

The 31-year-old midfielder received the Uefa award following votes from coaches whose teams took part in the competition.

Redondo who has now moved to AC Milan dazzled spectators with his domination of the midfield and particluarly impressed with his performances against Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Valencia.

It was Redondo's spectacular back-heel that set up Raul's second goal in Real Madrid's 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Dumped

However, the Argentinian has become another casualty of Real's summer clear-out, being tranferred to AC Milanonly days after pledging his loyalty to the club.

Steve McManaman
McManaman: out in the cold at Real
The sale of Redondo gave the Spanish side some much-needed cash after the record-breaking purchase of Luis Figo for 37m.

Real's decision to dump the player who helped them to two Champions League and two domestic league titles has angered fans.

Another Real Star of last season who appears to have been frozen out over the summer is Steve McManaman.

Though pledging to fight for his place on the team, it has become increasingly clear that the former Liverpool player is surplus to requirements.

Redondo's other former team mate Raul has been named as the best forward in the 1999/2000 Champions League.
