Blackburn   2 - 3   Everton

Mikel Arteta
Arteta slots in from the penalty spot to out Everton ahead

By Ian Hughes

Tim Cahill's late strike finally saw Everton past a stubborn Blackburn.

Mikel Arteta's penalty put the Toffees ahead but the Spaniard could have been sent off shortly after for poking Morten Gamst Pedersen in the eye.

Rovers levelled when Steven Nzonzi smashed in from 30 yards but Everton regained the lead when substitute Yakubu nodded in with his first touch.

Jason Roberts restored parity with a 25-yard drive before Cahill tapped in Yakubu's low cross to snatch victory.

The result leaves Everton only one point behind seventh-place Aston Villa and two adrift of Liverpool, who are in sixth place in the table - the last slot that brings Europa League qualification.

The Toffees' current form - they are now unbeaten their last eight league matches - suggests they could still overhaul their Merseyside rivals, and their intent to do that was obvious from the first at Ewood Park.

Rovers went into the match having kept three clean sheets in their last three games but they were stunned by Everton's blistering opening which saw them keep possession in a manner akin to Barcelona.

Allaydyce disappointed after 'outstanding' goals

And when Ryan Nelsen clumsily upended Arteta in the area, the midfielder easily scored the resultant spot-kick to put the visitors ahead after only four minutes.

There was no let-up from David Moyes's men for the next 15 minutes as their crisp passing and interchanges kept Rovers pinned back in their own half and chasing shadows.

Arteta was at the heart of it all but he was extremely lucky to receive only a caution after he reacted angrily to a challenge by Pedersen and poked the Norwegian in the cheek and then the eye. Pedersen was also booked.

Just before that Blackburn had come close to a leveller - very much against the run of play - when Cahill cleared off the line after a corner led to a scramble in the box.

For all their possession, Everton were unable to carve out clear chances and slowly Rovers began to claw their way back into the match.

A Pedersen free-kick that was deflected wide sparked a spell of sustained pressure as bombardment from the right caused chaos in the Everton area.

Martin Olsson's low drive was blocked by Phil Jagielka and a Keith Andrews effort almost sneaked through the legs of Tim Howard.

But the Toffees held on until the break and after the restart they appeared determined to reassert themselves and dominated as they had at the start of the game.

Excellent ball retention soon led to two chances for Everton to underline their dominance but Cahill nodded Tony Hibbert's cross over the bar and Leighton Baines was unlucky to see his rasping 20-yard effort smash back off the post.

Instead it was Rovers who were to strike next when Nzonzi collected the ball and shrugged off one challenge before setting himself and unleashing an unstoppable effort from 30 yards that whistled past Howard.

It was a strike of the highest quality and clearly buoyed the hosts but only 10 minutes later they found themselves behind again.

Moyes praises 'fantastic' Arteta

Two substitutes combined for Everton as Victor Anichebe headed on Baines's throw into the box and Yakubu - on the pitch for only 22 seconds - nodded in from close range.

The lead lasted only two minutes though as Rovers benefited from new blood when substitute Roberts lashed in from 25 yards after latching on to Nikola Kalinic's through ball.

But there was still more drama to come and Yakubu was involved again when he crossed low for Chill to tap in on the goal-line to put Everton ahead and cap an incredible 11-minute spell that brought three goals.

Rovers may count themselves unlucky, but Everton got their reward for a tenacious and often stylish performance.

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce:
"It is bitterly disappointing to lose because of the outstanding quality of our goals today.

"Steven Nzonzi's goal - our first - was tremendous, you won't have seen a better one anywhere in the country today, or perhaps all season.

"And when Jason Roberts scored our second equaliser I thought we would go on and win it but we couldn't finish our chances and they went and pinched the winner.

"We worked our way back into the game but it was very unlike us to defend the way we did today and concede three very poor goals."

Everton manager David Moyes:
"Our football today was up there with the best. Some of the stuff we played, on a difficult pitch, was excellent.

"They scored two pretty good goals from distance but I was disappointed because I thought we'd created lots of chances but could not finish them off.

"I thought the team was terrific from the first minute and it was great that Yakubu came off the bench to score a goal and make another.

"I've had a word with Mikel Arteta about poking Morten Gamst Pedersen in the eye - he should not have done it and I've told him so. But we should talk about his football, he was head and shoulders above anybody on the field today."
