Zoltan Gera
Chances were at a premium as both sides settled for a point at Craven Cottage

By Kevin Darling

Wolves ground out their third goalless draw in four games to edge closer to Premier League safety.

Bobby Zamora created the best chance of a low-key affair when his terrific 25-yard strike rattled the post.

Christophe Berra's tame late header was the only effort on target in the whole match - a Premier League record.

Zoltan Gera also headed over for Fulham late on but it was a tentative display from the hosts ahead of their Europa League semi-final against Hamburg.

Uefa will decide on Monday whether Thursday's match in Germany will be able to go ahead due to the cloud of volcanic ash currently disrupting UK flights.

Hodgson gives credit to Wolves

With that momentous occasion seemingly on Fulham's mind, and Wolves's low-scoring recent form, rarely has a match looked more destined for a stalemate.

In fact, the two sides conspired to make Premier League history, creating just one shot on target between them throughout the entire 90 minutes.

Despite the game's poor entertainment value, neither manager will displeased with its outcome.

Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson, whose key centre-back Brede Hangeland missed the game because his wife is expecting a baby, will be relieved the rest of his squad came through unscathed.

Meanwhile, his Wolves counterpart Mick McCarthy will be delighted with another precious point on the road to Premier League security.

The best chance of a tepid opening to the match fell to England hopeful Zamora, who glanced a header wide from Danny Murphy's free-kick.

Wolves, who have the joint most feeble attack in the division, mustered their first shot on goal after 35 minutes when Ronald Zubar's ambitious volley from edge of the box flew a good 20 yards wide.

Kevin Doyle, who has been the most lethal member of the midlanders' misfiring attack with seven goals, had two quick chances to force the breakthrough shortly before half-time.

First, the Irishman cut inside and fired inches wide from eight yards, before heading way off target from David Jones's inviting corner.

With opportunities at a premium at the other end, Zamora cut a frustrated figure and picked up a well-warranted booking for a comically rash challenge on Berra.

The Cottagers began the second half in comparatively lively fashion and Damien Duff scuffed a shot wide from 10 yards after an unconvincing punch by goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

McCarthy happy with Wolves clean sheet

Zamora was then desperately unlucky not to score his 20th goal of the season when he for once escaped the attentions of Jody Craddock only to see a fierce strike come back off the woodwork.

The hosts continued to look the more likely scorers and Chris Smalling's header narrowly missed the target from a corner, before Gera nodded an excellent Duff cross just over.

At the other end, Berra's near-post header fell into the arms of Cottagers stopper Mark Schwarzer in the game's only on-target strike.

The afternoon was succinctly summed up in the closing stages when Zamora meticulously lined up a free-kick in a promising position, before promptly ballooning his strike high into the stands.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson:
"It wasn't a case of Thursday being a distraction today, it was a case of having to play a team who are difficult to deal with.

"They are well-rehearsed with their style of play, you have to make sure you don't slip up and concede goals.

"In the second half we did well to get the ball down and get behind them."

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:
"I don't think we're safe yet but games are running out and we have taken another point.

"We still have important games left. This is silly season. Results are strange at this time of year and I don't want any silly results that might upset us."
