Sunderland v Burnley
Sunderland's Jordan Henderson battles with Burnley's Michael Duff

By Aimee Lewis

Burnley's Premier League future looks increasingly precarious after goals from Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent secured a deserved win for Sunderland.

Sunderland laid siege to Burnley's goal before Campbell slid in from close range to convert Alan Hutton's right-wing cross beyond Brian Jensen.

Campbell's downward header across goal then put Bent through to volley home.

Burnley improved after the break with Robbie Blake putting Steven Thompson free to score with a 25-yard drive.

However, it was all a little too late for a Burnley team who look set for life in the Championship.

We were close to blowing them away - Bruce

The Clarets remain four points off safety, but having played a game more than fellow strugglers Hull, West Ham and Wigan, and with games against Liverpool, Birmingham and Tottenham to follow, there is no respite.

Burnley have the worst defensive record in the Premier League and, on evidence of their first-half performance in particular, it does not take much imagination to see why.

The visitors were out-played, out-muscled and out-passed by Sunderland as the home side gradually pressurised Burnley's fragile defence until a host of chances came their way.

Burnley had Jensen to thank for keeping them level in the 20th minute, with the big Dane getting his fingertips on John Mensah's close-range header and then quickly recovering to prevent Michael Turner's follow-up.

Kenwyne Jones, who returned to the starting line-up after missing last week's defeat against West Ham, then hit the post before Campbell finally put the home side ahead with his seventh goal of the season.

Bent held the ball up for the onrushing Alan Hutton, who crossed for the former Manchester United and Hull player to finish with aplomb.

Laws pleased with Burnley effort

A bedraggled Burnley were struggling to cope and just before the break Bent doubled the home side's lead with the simplest of goals, his 23rd of the season.

David Meyler's delightful chip found Campbell and the forward stretched every sinew to head the ball back across goal for the unmarked Bent to volley home left-footed.

Burnley created little and considering no away team has scored more than once at the Stadium of Light this year, the three points seemed to be heading Sunderland's way.

The visitors showed greater resilience after the break but, in truth, a comeback seemed highly unlikely even though Burnley had plenty of second-half possession.

Graham Alexander's daisy cutter was the only chance of note before Thompson scored eight minutes before time.

Almost a minute after being introduced to the game, Blake fed fellow substitute Thompson, whose driving shot from outside the box gave the diving Craig Gordon no chance.

That goal put the Black Cats slightly on edge, but anything other than a win would have been unjust for a Sunderland side who remain unbeaten at home since December.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce:
"Credit to Burnley, they never gave in and kept sticking at it, hoping for a lifeline and they got one with 10 minutes to go.

"We should have been out of sight. It would have been a bit unjust had they got anything from it.

"I'm delighted with our home form and overall we're in there with a shout to get 10th."
