Stoke   2 - 0   Hull

By Ollie Williams

Toothless Hull never threatened to lift themselves out of the bottom three as Ricardo Fuller and Liam Lawrence struck to earn Stoke a comfortable win.

Fuller chased down Dave Kitson's flick and expertly slotted past Boaz Myhill with the outside of his right boot.

Despite losing Fuller at half-time, Stoke rarely looked in much danger.

George Boateng's head injury, sustained while clearing from Tuncay, left Hull with 10 men and Lawrence slotted home from 15 yards to confirm the win.

The result gave Stoke a first home victory in five league outings at the Britannia Stadium, but Hull continue to seek a first league away win after a day when a draw would have moved them above West Ham.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis

Pulis pleased to pass 40 points

Jamaican striker Fuller, recalled to the starting line-up after scoring a superb winner against West Ham last week, wasted little time in rewarding the faith of manager Tony Pulis.

Kitson's flick should have been cleared by Paul McShane, but Fuller left the defender behind and produced a glorious, curling finish into the left-hand corner, though he was caught on the ankle by McShane in the act of scoring.

Fuller eventually rejoined the action, but a further knock - alongside more tangles with McShane - saw him replaced by Tuncay at the break, not that Stoke suffered as a result.

George Boateng is struck by Tuncay
Tuncay's attempt left Boateng with a suspected fractured cheekbone

Chances of real merit were few and far between, Stoke defender Robert Huth's snatched shot into Row Z from a Rory Delap throw-in being the closest anyone came to scoring in the remainder of the first half.

Bookings began to flow after the break, most notably for Tuncay having brought down Richard Garcia, but shots on goal remained at a premium.

The away side waited until the 66th minute for their first proper attempt and, even then, Boateng's low shot was blocked by Glenn Whelan well before reaching the net.

The introduction of Jozy Altidore for the ineffective Caleb Folan temporarily injected life into Hull, but Stoke quickly matched the increase in tempo.

Dowie frustrated by 'schoolboy' defending

Tuncay lined up a scissor kick as a high ball dropped in the Hull area, but accidentally clattered the head of Boateng, leaving the defender in need of extensive treatment for a suspected fractured cheekbone.

While medical staff stretchered Boateng to a waiting ambulance, boss Iain Dowie - having used all his substitutions - lectured his remaining players in a bid to rescue the game.

Tuncay squandered an opportunity to seal the points, dragging his shot to the left after Myhill's poor clearance left the goal gaping, before substitute Geovanni, flying into a challenge with both sets of studs showing, escaped with just a booking.

Hull continued to press despite their numerical disadvantage, but it proved their undoing as Lawrence struck on the counter, rolling the ball past Myhill to cap fine build-up play from Tuncay and Matthew Etherington.

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis:

"Hull came and had a right go, they're fighting for their lives, but we were a little bit better and deserved to win.

"They played some good stuff in front and across but we worked very hard to make sure we were tight and solid.

"Liam Lawrence took his goal well but you never feel safe as a manager, you always want two, then three, then four."

Hull City's Iain Dowie:

"I thought we grabbed the impetus of the game but we lost George Boateng with a horrendous-looking injury.

"I'm disappointed with the goal in the first half - it was a poor, poor goal to give away. It was a schoolboy goal, something we cannot afford to do, and that's what cost us dearly.

"We limited Stoke's big strengths very well today in terms of set pieces. Second half we played the ball much better, but the first was not quite good enough on the ball.

"It looks like George will have to stay in hospital tonight, he had a lot of blood in his mouth. The thoughts in the dressing-room are with George. It was a fantastic header and a hell of a kick in the mouth."
