Wigan   1 - 0   Burnley

Hugo Rodallega celebrates his last-gasp goal
Rodallega celebrates his late goal as Burnley players are left stunned

Hugo Rodallega's injury-time diving header earned Wigan a vital win over relegation rivals Burnley.

Latics defender Gary Caldwell headed against the post in the only highlight of a dull first half at the DW Stadium.

In a livelier second period James McCarthy had a penalty shout rejected for the home side while Martin Paterson's volley hit the Wigan bar.

Burnley keeper Brian Jensen kept out Jason Scotland and Mohamed Diame before Rodallega popped up late on to score.

After last week's loss to fellow relegation strugglers Wolves, Burnley made four changes, and the shake-up almost produced instant results, as the Clarets began brightly.

Gazza the Cat

Steven Fletcher and Graham Alexander both tried their luck early on, but after Burnley's initial enthusiasm faded, it was the home side who came closest to breaking the deadlock.

A miscommunication between Jensen and Alexander saw the visitors concede an unnecessary corner, which was swung in by McCarthy, and Caldwell's strong header rattled the right-hand post.

Martinez happy with important win over Burnley

But that was as close as either side came to scoring in a scrappy first half devoid of real goalscoring chances, which only went to show why both teams are struggling this season.

Mercifully the standard of play improved after the break, with more enthusiasm in front of goal.

McCarthy began to be a thorn in Burnley's side and when he shimmied his way into the box on the Wigan right, defender Leon Cort took his legs from under him, but the young Scot was adjudged to have lost his footing and his penalty shouts were waved away.

Almost instantly the visitors went on the counter-attack but David Nugent wasted the opening with his hurried attempted chip from distance, when he should have taken more time over his chance.

Having squandered one of the Clarets' better opportunities, Nugent then set up the best chance of the game up to that point, chipping the ball into the path of the onrushing Paterson, who volleyed onto the top of the bar.

Laws devastated after 'cruel, cruel' day

As the game opened up, both teams did their best to go for the win, with Wigan seeming to apply more pressure, although they appeared to be even more lacking in punch in front of goal than the visitors.

But that lack of activity for goalkeeper Jensen made his late intervention all the more impressive.

First the Dane pushed a Scotland shot over the bar after failing to clear Victor Moses's cross properly, and from the resulting corner, Diame thundered in a volley which the stopper also pushed over.

Those late heroics looked like they would be enough to earn Burnley just their second away point of the season.

But deep into injury time, substitute Moses sent in a cross from the right and, to the delight of the home fans, Rodallega headed past the valiant Jensen to seal victory.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez:

"It's a great feeling to get above 30 points but there's a long way to go and whoever feels different is mistaken.

"There's a lot of hard work to do, there are many games left and many points to play for.

"The way they played today, Burnley will get points anywhere and all the seven teams (at the bottom) are trying to get out of those places, so there are still a lot of twists and turns."

Burnley manager Brian Laws:

"They've put so much in, of course they're devastated but I said if you put that effort and determination in we will get wins under our belts,

"It is a cruel game but we can't allow that to take away the positives, there were a lot of things that went well.

"I'm delighted as a manager, I'm very proud of them and if we continue like that I'm sure the supporters will be proud of them too."
