Sunderland   1 - 1   Man City

Adam Johnson celebrates
Johnson replaced Wright-Phillips and produced his stunning goal in injury time

By Marc Vesty

Adam Johnson's stunning injury-time equaliser salvaged a vital point for Manchester City in their bid to finish fourth in the Premier League.

Kenwyne Jones headed Sunderland in front after eight minutes when he looped Steed Malbranque's cross over Shay Given.

City were thwarted by five superb second-half saves from Craig Gordon as hard-working Sunderland held on.

But substitute Johnson's sublime curled finish earned City a draw.

Considering this was a battle between a City side looking to secure Champions League qualification via a top-four finish and a Sunderland team keen to move further away from the bottom three, it was perhaps surprising that the Black Cats dominated the early exchanges.

However, Sunderland went into the game on the back of a mini revival having picked up four points and kept two clean sheets from their last two matches after a run of 13 league games without victory.

And after eight minutes a defence which has only conceded 14 goals at the Stadium of Light this season was given something to hold on to.

The impressive Malbranque weaved into space on the left and crossed for Jones, the striker rising above Vincent Kompany to direct his header beyond Given.

Despite having only made one change, Shaun Wright-Phillips coming in for Johnson, City's slack display was incomparable to their superb 4-2 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge 15 days ago.

Late equaliser frustrates Bruce

And they could have been punished further for their poor start with Trinidad and Tobago striker Jones scuffing his shot when clean through, pulling a thigh muscle as he did so which ultimately ended his afternoon at half time.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini responded to his side's poor showing by making a change 12 minutes before the break when he replaced full-back Wayne Bridge with striker Roque Santa Cruz to try and provide a partner for Carlos Tevez.

And after being dominated for the opening 50 minutes, City finally produced a reaction as they began to push forward in search of the equaliser.

However, five top-class saves from the feet of Scotland goalkeeper Gordon looked to have earned the home side three precious points and back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time in 48 games, a run stretching back to December 2008.

The first save denied Santa Cruz who fired low after Tevez's headed flick put him through - before Gordon then cleared Wright-Phillips' low drive with his feet.

Champions League is still possible - Mancini

An instinctive save kept Tevez's deft touch away from goal and Gordon's quick reactions stopped Bellamy's low drive as Sunderland continued to frustrate the visitors.

Gordon then saved Bellamy's injury-time drive with his feet, but was finally beaten by a moment of sheer inspiration from a player Sunderland tried to sign in January.

Johnson, whose family are Sunderland fans, collected the ball just inside the 18-yard box and picked out the top corner with an inch-perfect left-footed finish that moved City to within two points of fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce:
"It's quite incredible to concede so late again. I think that's eight or 10 points we've dropped in the last 10 minutes of games now and it's very frustrating. To get so close to a win, this feels like a defeat.

"It was a wonder goal, though, and ironic that a Sunderland fan and player we tried to sign for six months should score it. And if I'm honest the keeper has kept us in it in the second half so, overall, it looks a fair result.

"I felt we missed Kenwyne Jones when he had to come off with a thigh injury at half time, but that's the story of our season really. We hope it's not too bad, but he's sore at the moment."

Man City boss Roberto Mancini:
"We wanted to win this game but in the first half we didn't play well and conceded early. Fortunately, we played much better in second half.

"I was frustrated at half time because we didn't play like we did against Chelsea. Sunderland played well but if you want to reach fourth spot you have to win these games.

"The race for fourth is still the same, though. We have one game in hand, we must play Tottenham, Aston Villa and Arsenal, so we have many important games. We have a chance."
