Bolton   4 - 0   Wigan

By Owen Phillips

Bolton moved eight points clear of the Premier League drop zone with a thumping victory over struggling Wigan.

Johan Elmander set Bolton on their way, capitalising on some poor defending to finish from close-range early on.

Kevin Davies doubled the lead with a cool penalty after the hapless Gary Caldwell felled Tamir Cohen in the box.

Fabrice Muamba's wonderful run and finish after a swift breakaway made it 3-0 and Matthew Taylor completed the scoring with another fine cross-shot.

Wigan, who have now conceded 57 goals in the league this season, can have few complaints about the result or indeed the margin of victory.

A promising spell by the Latics soon petered out after the interval and home keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen only had to make one noteworthy save.

Emphatic Bolton win pleases Coyle

And although that was a world-class, one-handed stop to keep out Charles N'Zogbia's low strike with the scores at 1-0, Bolton barely allowed their visitors a look-in after that.

Wigan top-scorer Hugo Rodallega did have a strong early penalty claim dismissed by referee Mike Dean after a clumsy challenge by Zat Knight.

But those two moments apart, all the chances went the home side's way.

The Trotters, started confidently despite their 4-0 hammering at Sunderland in midweek and were soon 1-0 up.

A long punt from Jaaskelainen led to Titus Bramble outmuscled by Davies and Elmander latched on to the flick on to run beyond Caldwell and coolly sidefoot the ball through Chris Kirkland's legs.

Bolton may have only scored four goals in their last 10 games going into this fixture but Owen Coyle's men have a decent recent home record, losing just once under their new boss.

And against a Wigan side who have won only one match in nine on their travels, the chances of a comeback looked slim.

That seemed even less likely just 90 seconds into the second half when the home side were awarded a penalty.

Caldwell was once again at fault, getting in a horrible muddle in his own area and recklessly lunging in on Cohen.

Davies easily beat Kirkland with a confidently struck penalty and within six minutes the game was as good as over thanks to the goal of the game.

A Latics attack fizzled out 50 yards from goal and Bolton broke swiftly with Chung-Young Lee who ran forward purposefully.

Lee found the excellent Muamba who, haring towards the Wigan goal, showed wonderful control and poise to turn Caldwell one way and then the other before unleashing a fine shot across Kirkland and into the far corner.

Substitute Taylor completed a miserable afternoon for the visitors, with another tidy finish across Kirkland after Caldwell failed to deal with an Elmander header.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle:
"When I took the job I believed I could keep Bolton in the league. The short-term aim was to do that. We have taken a step along that road.

"It was all about getting the three points. To get it on the back of an accomplished performance was terrific. I thought the players' desire and their hunger to get about the game and the quality they showed at times was very pleasing.

"I pride myself on making sure we have a terrific home record. In my tenure here we have lost one game and that was against Arsenal in my first match.

"This was a massive victory and gives us a bit of breathing space. That is all it does. We now have to focus on the games coming up and go and earn points."

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez:
"It was a huge, huge shock because the nature of the goals were really soft. That is the top and bottom.

Wigan too inconsistent - Martinez

"You can't win football games if you concede the nature of the goals we did. I felt that once the first goal went in it was a big ask. The game went away from us and got harder and we looked a little bit mentally drained. Maybe the Monday performance affected us that way.

"I felt there two key moments in the game. The possible penalty in the first half we did not get for the foul on Rodallega and the one in the second half.

"Zat Knight didn't get the ball and Hugo would not go down like that when he could have shot at goal. You look at the penalty Bolton got and the one we didn't get, there was an inconsistency."
