Blackburn   1 - 0   Hull

Martin Olsson and Keith Andrews
Martin Olsson celebrates with Keith Andrews following Blackburn's opener

By Les Roopanarine

Blackburn returned to the Premier League winners' circle courtesy of a workmanlike victory over 10-man Hull.

Rovers took an early lead when Martin Olsson drilled home from a narrow angle off Hull keeper Boaz Myhill's heels.

Hull suffered another blow just before the break when George Boateng saw red for a foul on Morten Gamst Pedersen.

Myhill kept Hull in the hunt with a brilliant second-half save from Gael Givet, but for all their resilience they could not fashion an equaliser.

It was back to business as usual for Blackburn, who have been woeful away from Ewood Park this season - never more so than in a 3-0 weekend defeat at Stoke - but bettered in their Pennines stronghold only by Manchester City and Tottenham.

Hull, however, who arrived in Lancashire having lost just once in six games since the turn of the year, will be disappointed at their failure to take anything from a game in which, even after Boateng's departure, they were never less than competitive.

Tigers manager Phil Brown has imbued his side with spirit and determination, and both qualities were in evidence as they battled to regain a foothold in the game.

That, however, does not alter the reality that they now sit seventeenth in the Premier League table, just a point above the relegation zone.

Blackburn, on the other hand, climb to the rarefied heights of 11th, although it would be overstating things to say that manager Sam Allardyce outwitted his former Bolton assistant.

Blackburn home form pleases Allardyce

A case of the master putting the apprentice in his place this was not, not least because there was more than a whiff of good fortune about Blackburn's opener.

Olsson, nominally playing at left-back but lurking in an advanced left-midfield position, collected a chipped pass from Pedersen before racing into the area.

The geometry was stacked in Hull's favour, but from the tightest of angles the Swede shook off the attentions of Craig Fagan to force a low shot through Myhill's legs.

The ball appeared to take a nick off the keeper's left heel, and it would be surprising if the Wales international did not receive a call from the dubious goals committee.

Yet it would be harsh to censure Myhill, who had earlier made a superb reflex save from Ryan Nelsen's close-range header and later pulled off an even more impressive one when he tipped a Givet header onto the bar from point-blank range.

Many on Humberside will instead lay the blame firmly at the door of referee Lee Probert, who dismissed Boateng five minutes before the interval for what he adjudged to be an elbow on Pedersen.

It was a moot point - Boateng's arms were raised, but he too was clattered as he contested an aerial challenge with the Norway international - yet the decision unsurprisingly swung the pendulum firmly in Blackburn's direction.

606: DEBATE

Jan Vennegor of Hesselink had dovetailed promisingly with Stephen Hunt up to that point, setting up the Republic of Ireland man for an early chance that whistled just over before forcing an excellent save from Paul Robinson when Hunt returned the favour.

But Brown, seeking to even up the numbers in midfield, withdrew Vennegor of Hesselink in favour of Nigerian anchorman Seyi Olofinjana, and Hull's attacking impetus understandably went with the Dutchman.

Blackburn had been toothless in attack against Stoke at the weekend, and despite a strong start the problem threatened to rear its head again as they struggled to break down Hull.

Brown wants Boateng red card rethink

The honourable exception was Olsson, who followed up his goal with a right-foot effort that was well gathered by Myhill before heading just wide from a partially-cleared Pedersen throw-in.

Brett Emerton spurned an outstanding opportunity to double Rovers' advantage, shooting straight at Myhill after being put through by El Hadji Diouf, and was quickly replaced by Jason Roberts as Allardyce switched to a two-man attack.

By that stage Brown had made a similarly positive move, introducing Amr Zaki and Kamil Zayatte as he switched to a 3-4-2 formation.

But neither side could fashion a breakthrough and few would begrudge Blackburn victory on a night that began in sombre fashion with an impeccably-observed minute's silence for John Taylor, the Rovers supporter who died in tragic circumstances at the weekend.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce:

"It's three home wins on the trot and that's a very pleasing thing.

"That's top-eight form, and here at Ewood Park we're a force to be reckoned with.

"Olsson's goal was a piece of outstanding ability, so I think it would be a shame if it was taken off him.

"He has lots of ability and he has now learned to use it now to great effect.

"Technically, Boateng's offence was a red - but, for me, it wasn't intentional."

Hull manager Phil Brown on George Boateng's dismissal:

"For me, it was a poor decision. I'm not saying the game hinged on it, but the referee reacted too quickly.

"It was a clash of heads with two players going for the ball.

"George was unconscious with a head injury and you can tell by the reaction of the players that it was impulsive.

"The word 'frivolous' has been attached to the appeals procedure, but the decision did affect the game and it could have an effect two or three games down the line if George gets a suspension.

"George can't believe it, I can't believe it, and hopefully Lee Probert will look at it and he won't be able to believe it either."
