Hull   2 - 2   Wolverhampton

Michael Mancienne gets in an important tackle on Hull's Jozy Altidore
Michael Mancienne gets in an important tackle on Hull's Jozy Altidore

By Oliver Brett

Wolves twice came from a goal down to earn a point at Hull in an unexpectedly entertaining relegation tussle.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink's fine strike gave Hull an early lead but Anthony Gardner let the visitors back in the contest with a comical own-goal.

Stephen Hunt coolly slotted a penalty after a clumsy foul from Ronald Zubar to restore Hull's fragile lead.

But Matthew Jarvis then converted Kevin Foley's cross to ensure the home supporters left frustrated.

Wolves had scored just 17 times in the league before Saturday's encounter at the KC Stadium, so it was no surprise that they should start off concentrating solely on defence, with Kevin Doyle their only striker.

McCarthy 'dances' around Hunt question

But that tactic did not work for long. Vennegoor of Hesselink, who has been used mainly as a substitute by Phil Brown since signing for Hull last September, opened the scoring with a fine left-footed drive from about 20 yards after Jozy Altidore had held off two defenders strongly before playing in the Dutchman.

So Wolves had to attack, knowing they cannot afford to be losing games to teams on a similar footing to themselves. The middle period of the first half saw the visitors earn a series of corners and create plenty of danger, but the half-chances created tended to go to defenders.

Foley was completely unchallenged as he rose well to meet a Stephen Ward corner, but was unable to force a save out of Boaz Myhill.

After a misplaced pass from Hunt, Ward then made a dangerous interception but fired his shot wide - and Christophe Berra needed only a slight touch from another corner to find the net, but with Gardner in close attention he was unable to do so.

Despite those moments, Hull had defended well and produced enough creativity themselves to suggest they should have been confident of hanging on to their lead.

But the second half had barely got going when Hunt allowed Ronald Zubar to chase down a ball the Hull man had thought was going out of play.

Zubar's speculative cross needed a simple clearance from Gardner, under little pressure, but a dreadful mis-kick from the Hull defender took the ball spiralling over Myhill's outstretched arms and into the net.

If that was a gift from Wolves, then the favour was swiftly returned - Zubar mindlessly climbing all over Altidore in the penalty area to give referee Mike Dean little option but to award the penalty.

Hull embarked on their best period of the match but neither Vennegoor of Hesselink, with a header, nor Altidore, on a one-on-one with Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, were able to make it 3-1.

We're disappointed with draw - Brown

Wolves were still making headway of their own, and when Foley sent over a cross from the right, Jarvis picked his spot and drove home a right-footed shot - with no great pace but enough to beat Myhill - and the teams were deadlocked once more.

Brown sent on Amr Zaki in place of Altidore for the final 20 minutes but there was no dramatic late goal for Hull as Wolves once again turned to their strong suit, defence, and held out resolutely.

And they nearly produced a winner of their own when new loan signing Geoffrey Mujangi Bia drove a shot straight at Myhill after a Wolves free-kick had caused panic in the Hull box.

Hull city boss Phil Brown:
"[Stephen Hunt] did show for me that he wanted to be a Hull City player and I think he showed that to the fans as well. I'm very confident [he will stay] and the chairman is working very hard to sort out the finances. If I sold Stephen Hunt these fans would go crazy.

"Defensively the lapses have to stop. We have to minimise the mistakes we're making. Having gone in front twice I'm the more disappointed manager I would imagine."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre came into my mind when they scored their second goal. We lost the ball in midfield, lost the tackle - and then it's a ridiculous penalty to give away.

[On whether he is keen to sign Stephen Hunt]: "You and me can dance around our handbags all evening and you'll still be asking me that question."
