Wolverhampton   0 - 3   Man City

Carlos Tevez
Carlos Tevez's opening strike creates more festive cheer for his new Italian boss

By Mark Ashenden

Roberto Mancini made it maximum points after two games in charge of Manchester City with victory over Wolves to claim a first away win in three months.

Craig Bellamy blazed over for the Blues before setting up Carlos Tevez to hook in off Christophe Berra's deflection.

Chris Iwelumo and Kevin Doyle went close for Wolves but Javier Garrido curled in a controversial free-kick after a Bellamy offside was not given.

Tevez smashed in a low second at the end after a pass by substitute Robinho.

As well as closing in on the top four spots after a first win on their travels since their defeat of Portsmouth on 30 August, City's new boss Mancini will be delighted with a second successive clean sheet.

Long Live the Goat

Both clubs were playing their second game in three days and both managers made a number of changes for this battle in the fog at Molineux.

While Mancini brought in Bellamy for the rested Robinho, Mick McCarthy left four on the Wolves bench from the team that lost to Liverpool and beefed up his midfield with Michael Mancienne in the centre.

It was the hosts who dominated at the start, using Iwelumo - making his first Premier League start - as a target man for a string of long punts, and the towering striker almost set up the opener by nodding down to Andrew Surman who blasted over.

Mancini transfers praise to players

Despite a couple of bright runs by Martin Petrov and Tevez, Mancini's men looked largely lethargic until Bellamy wasted one glorious opportunity on the half hour, but he soon made amends in the next attack.

Just one minute after firing over from four yards, the Welshman flew past Jody Craddock on the left to pull the ball back for Tevez who struck his seventh goal in seven games, but only after a cruel deflection off Berra.

The smile on Mancini's face was fully justified, with the Blues boss having just switched Petrov and Stephen Ireland and pushed Bellamy forward to support Tevez.

Matters got worse for the hosts, with further personnel changes needed by McCarthy at the break after a painful fall for Berra led to the introduction of Richard Stearman at the back.

But the second half began with sparks at both ends as Bellamy slotted a Petrov through-ball narrowly wide.

In the next attack Wolves created their best opening, as Iwelumo's deflected shot sailed over after a delightful flowing move involving seven swift touches around the box.

McCarthy can't fault Wolves

Mancini prowled increasingly anxiously on the touchline and the former Inter Milan man soon had to endure watching his defender Kolo Toure outpaced by Doyle, who could only shoot at Given's legs.

Misfortune was again involved as City scored a crucial second goal when play was allowed to continue after Bellamy was in an offside position.

Gareth Barry was fouled by Mancienne in the immediate attack and as an incensed McCarthy jumped up and down on the sidelines, up stepped Garrido to curl in a low free-kick around the wall.

As the Wolves players fumed, Tevez almost chipped in after a delightful move involving Petrov and Bellamy, but the Argentine did not have to wait long for his brace.

The Brazilian Robinho crossed the ball in from the right for Tevez, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner past Marcus Hahnemann.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy on City's second goal:
"I'm not going to comment on it. It might cost me a few quid if I do. I will just put what I think in my report.

"But in terms of our performance, I thought the final scoreline was very harsh. I thought we played well.

"I know that sounds ridiculous when you've lost 3-0 but we played as well with the ball as we have done for a long time."

Man City boss Roberto Mancini:
"It was a fantastic performance. To play like that just two days after beating Stoke makes me very happy because we played very well. We suffered a bit during the game but I am very happy for the players.

"In Italy it is impossible to play two games in three days, but this is England and this was a fantastic performance."
