Graham Alexander celebrates his equaliser for Burnley against Arsenal
Graham Alexander reels away after scoring his 100th league goal

Graham Alexander's penalty earned Burnley a deserved point as Arsenal failed to maintain the pressure on Chelsea and Manchester United at the Premier League summit.

Burnley looked like they might be in for a long night at Turf Moor after Cesc Fabregas capped a scintillating Arsenal opening salvo with an early goal.

Arsenal threatened to put the game to bed before Burnley got out of the blocks as Fabregas quickly wasted another chance and Andrey Arshavin struck an upright.

But Burnley, who were denied by the woodwork themselves in the opening seconds when Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia turned Thomas Vermaelen's wayward header on to the bar, are formidable opponents at the wonderfully atmospheric Turf Moor and refused to lie down.

And Alexander, the master from 12 yards, put them level before half-time from the spot following Vermaelen's foul on the hulking figure of Andre Bikey.

Owen Coyle's side, inspired by the outstanding Chris Eagles and Kevin McDonald, more than matched Arsenal for long periods and looked the more likely winners for spells in the second half.

Eagles hit the post with a powerful drive and Steven Fletcher had a goal contentiously ruled out for offside as Burnley demonstrated once again that the spirit and quality they show at home will be the bedrock of their battle for Premier League survival this season.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger looked unimpressed as he marched away at the final whistle - and he has an added concern over Fabregas, who was forced out of the action before half-time with a suspected hamstring injury.

Wenger will also regard this as two points lost as Arsenal failed to cash in on the momentum built up by the win at Liverpool on Sunday.

Burnley boss Coyle was glowing in his praise for opposite number Wenger before the game - and his players were arguably guilty of showing Arsenal too much respect in the opening exchanges.

Coyle pleased with 'valuable point'

Arsenal survived an early scare, when Almunia turned Vermaelen's header on to the bar, to take control and go ahead after only seven minutes.

Burnley were punished heavily for poor defending, with Bikey caught in possession before Fabregas was allowed to stroll into the penalty area and score low past Brian Jensen.

Fabregas almost doubled Arsenal's advantage two minutes later when he again drove deep into the area, but this time his shot could only find the side-netting.

The alarm bells were ringing for Burnley, and they were only saved by good fortune when Arshavin crowned another incisive move with a low shot against the upright with Jensen helpless.

But Turf Moor has proved something of a graveyard for visiting teams this season, so it was no surprise that Burnley refused to go quietly, even when confronted by Arsenal's early superiority.

Slowly but surely, sticking to the strict passing principles preached by Coyle, Burnley edged their way back into the game and they drew level after 28 minutes.

Complacent Gunners frustrate Wenger

Referee Mike Dean had the easiest of decisions when Vermaelen flattened Bikey in the area, and the reliable Alexander completed what is now effectively a formality by drilling his penalty past Almunia for his 100th career league goal.

Arsenal were dealt a severe blow just before the interval when goalscorer Fabregas, who had taken a hefty knock early on, went off to be replaced by Aaron Ramsey.

Burnley keeper Jensen was forced into action once more before an eventful first half reached its conclusion, leaping athletically to turn over Vermaelen's header.

Eagles almost gave Burnley the lead after 62 minutes when he escaped the attentions of Samir Nasri and Mikael Silvestre on the right flank before striking the woodwork with a rising angled drive.

Arsenal were struggling to get a clear sight of Burnley's goal, and Wenger made an alteration when he introduced Eduardo for Theo Walcott, who was subdued throughout.

Burnley continued to show the positive approach that has made them such a tough proposition on their own territory this season, and they thought they had taken the lead after 69 minutes when Steven Fletcher turned in McDonald's cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Eagles was having an outstanding night, and he brought Turf Moor to its feet with another long-range shot that flew just over.

It was the final moment of danger - but the applause that rang out at the final whistle emphasised this was an outcome that was more satisfactory for Burnley than Arsenal.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle:

"I think at times we should have won. Arsenal play how football should be played, we should all aspire to that, but full credit to my players for what they offered tonight.

"I'm delighted with that, it was a valuable point.

"Arsenal paid us a lot of respect, but we should have been in front before they scored.

"I thought we scored a very good (disallowed) goal - Steve Fletcher looked onside to me, and if we'd gone in front at that point, we'd probably have seen it out."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:

"Today was a difficult game for us physically - they played a real Cup game, in the second half we should have won but didn't find sharpness to score.

"Maybe if we were guilty, it was that when we were 1-0 up, we were too easy instead of fighting for every ball.

"As soon as we were 1-0 up we took the foot off the pedal and they took advantage - they played on the counter-attack and we threw everything forward."
