Stoke   2 - 2   Wigan

Thomas Sorensen saves a late Wigan penalty to earn Stoke a draw
Stoke keeper Sorensen has an excellent record of saving penalties

By Paul Fletcher

Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen saved a late Hugo Rodallega penalty to earn his team a draw against Wigan.

Emmerson Boyce put Wigan ahead after Sorensen had saved Rodallega's initial header before Tuncay equalised with a low shot from a tight angle.

Maynor Figueroa put Wigan back in front after the break with a quickly taken free-kick from his own half before Ryan Shawcross headed Stoke level again.

Sorensen denied Rodallega after Robert Huth had brought down Jordi Gomez.

The Stoke keeper has conceded only one of the last six penalties he has faced in the Premier League but in truth it was a terrible attempt by Rodallega, who checked his approach to the ball before making poor contact with it.

It was a game that was uninspiring for large periods but it improved in the latter stages and was occasionally illuminated by moments of brilliance - none more so that Figueroa's free-kick.

It was struck low and hard, completely catching the opposition unawares - and it will surely be a contender for goal of the season.

Test-over-T20

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez might be frustrated that Rodallega missed the opportunity to ensure his team left the Britannia Stadium with all three points.

But after conceding 13 goals in their last two Premier League away fixtures - including the 9-1 humiliation at Tottenham - the result at least represents a tangible improvement.

Stoke, who went into the game as the joint lowest scorers in the Premier League with 13 goals, are normally extremely strong at home but apart from one period early in the second half they never really built any sustained pressure.

Still, the match is the first time that two different Potters' players have scored in the same league fixture this season.

There was little about the match that was memorable before Boyce put Wigan in front after 15 minutes.

Sorenson admits penalty encroachment

When the goal came it was initially shrouded in confusion, with few inside the stadium realising Boyce's header would count.

Rodallega was left completely unmarked as Jason Koumas swung a free-kick into the box and the Colombia international should have scored his seventh of the season with a bullet header but Sorensen made an excellent reaction save.

Boyce, who has now scored three this season after notching just once in his first 100 games for Wigan, was alert to the possibilities and headed home the rebound from close range.

Unfortunately for him, Salif Diao simultaneously tried to clear the danger with an ambitious and powerful over-head kick that caught Boyce flush in the face.

Stoke character impresses Pulis

Sorensen was also injured and the duo both received treatment before the goal was awarded, with Boyce eventually returning to the pitch sporting a blue bandage around his head.

James Beattie, the subject of headlines all week following his altercation with boss Tony Pulis, has been struggling with a knee injury and was named on the bench, with Ricardo Fuller and Tuncay starting up front - and it was the Turk who equalised with his first goal for Stoke.

Wigan were slow to react after Shawcross flicked on a long punt forward and the 27-year-old picked up the loose ball, ran at goal and drilled it beyond Chris Kirkland with a low strike from a tight angle.

Before Stoke equalised, Wigan felt they should have been awarded a penalty after Shawcross clearly tugged Paul Scharner's shirt.

Referee Mike Dean recently awarded Portsmouth a spot-kick for a similar infringement by Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic but was unmoved at the Britannia Stadium.

Tuncay equalised for Stoke
The emotional Tuncay was delighted with his first Stoke goal

Boyce was expected to return after the break and started to make his way down the tunnel before returning to the dressing room, with Scott Sinclair eventually replacing him.

Both teams created chances - Huth heading narrowly over and Tuncay just failing to convert a scuffed effort from Fuller, while Scharner went close with a glancing header at the near post.

But it was Stoke who started to dominate - and they had two excellent opportunities to take the lead in a matter of seconds.

Substitute Glenn Whelan should have at least hit the target from Matthew Etherington's sublime cross while Scharner's last-ditch challenge ensured Tuncay's goalbound strike deflected over.

But it was Wigan who scored next - with Figueroa's stunning equaliser silencing the fervent home supporters.

It was a goal created by Figueroa's speed of thought but also his sensational execution as he struck the ball with a flat trajectory that left Sorensen scrambling in vain.

We should have beaten Stoke - Martinez

Stoke restored parity within a minute of the restart when Shawcross's header from Etherington's corner thudded into an empty net after Kirkland had unwisely come off his line.

Wigan dominated the final minutes and Rodallega had his opportunity to win the game - although there was a doubt whether the spot kick should have been given as Gomez had been in an offside position before he received the ball.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis:
"Thomas will get all the plaudits for saving the penalty again.

"Being as good as he is, he should have pushed the ball over the bar for their first goal and not pushed it out.

"Thomas made amends for us with that penalty save. It is five out of six penalty saves now. Fingers crossed he keeps it going for us."

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez:
"I am just focusing on our performance - it was what we wanted.

"It was a real test of character and to not get the three points we deserved is a little disappointing.

"Figueroa has got that quality and you see that he meant it - we will be seeing that goal for a long time."
