Wigan   1 - 0   Sunderland

By David Ornstein

Hugo Rodallega celebrates his winning goal
Rodallega extended Wigan's unbeaten home run to five games

Hugo Rodallega scored from an acute angle as Wigan bounced back from a traumatic week with victory over Sunderland in a dour encounter.

Wigan, who lost 9-1 at Spurs last Sunday, started well as Jason Scotland fired against the post and Michael Turner almost headed into his own net.

The visitors rallied after the break and came close when Andy Reid and Kieran Richardson fired over the bar.

But Rodallega swept past Paulo da Silva before slotting home to seal to points.

The result moves Wigan up to 13th and goes some way to banishing the memory of the capitulation at White Hart Lane.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez will be delighted with the way his players responded to that defeat and extended their unbeaten home record to five games.

His Sunderland counterpart Steve Bruce will wonder how a side featuring only one change from that which beat Arsenal a week earlier contrived to produce such a listless display.

The Black Cats remain eighth in the table but will have to improve significantly if they are to win at Fulham next Sunday.

Wigan owner Dave Whelan threw some pre-match spice into the mix by claiming after the Tottenham loss that Bruce, who joined Sunderland from the Latics last summer, had left his club with "a few dodgy" signings.

Wigan character pleases Martinez

But Whelan's criticism looked increasingly ill-advised after a Latics side featuring just one change produced a vibrant and disciplined performance.

Lining up in a 4-5-1 formation with Scotland deployed as the lone striker, Wigan were solid in defence and midfield and looked to break forward in numbers at every opportunity.

Sunderland struggled to establish any sort of tempo and their defence was caught napping as Rodallega sneaked in behind Phil Bardsley but could only divert Charles N'Zogbia's cross into the side-netting.

And the visitors escaped once again when N'Zogbia shrugged off Da Silva and poked the ball square for Scotland, who saw his curling first-time effort beat Marton Fulop but rebound off the goalkeeper's left-hand upright.

Bruce frustrated after Wigan defeat

Moments later, Rodallega's free-kick was diverted towards his own goal by Turner, only for Fulop to come to his team's rescue with an athletic one-handed save.

Before those two gilt-edged chances, Darren Bent was denied a clear sight on goal by a superb last-ditch challenge from Emmerson Boyce, but that was the Black Cats' only chance of the opening 45 minutes.

Bent was starved of quality service by the creative trio of Steed Malbranque, Richardson and Reid, and it was easy to understand how Sunderland have now won just one of their last 17 away league games.

Unsurprisingly, Bruce replaced Malbranque with Frazier Campbell at half-time and switched from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 and the visitors immediately stepped up a gear.

It's been a really tough week - Kirkland

Reid sent a fizzing 30-yard drive narrowly over and delivered a pinpoint left-wing cross that Bent headed well wide from an inviting position six yards out.

Wigan responded with chances of their own - an unmarked Maynor Figueroa nodded straight at Fulop and Rodallega had a shot well saved before blazing wide.

But the 24-year-old's perseverance eventually paid off when he brushed aside the hapless De Silva to meet Paul Scharner's ball over the top and sidefoot a low winner past Fulop.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez:
"It has been a very painful and hurtful week and the humiliation comes if you don't react. But the players showed terrific character and bounced back.

"No-one more so than Chris Kirkland, who was brilliant today. Chris showed that if England need a goalkeeper it's clear he has got everything.

"We looked very mature, controlled the game and created many opportunities. To keep Sunderland to one opportunity on target shows great character. Everyone at Wigan Athletic should be proud.

"We are a team who are very hard to beat at home and we showed that today."

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce:
"It's frustrating and disappointing, for sure. That's a shadow of what we've produced for four or five weeks. The performance level was not there and that's sad for me.

"In the first half it looked like we just went through the motions. The first goal was always going to be vital but we didn't get anywhere near it, especially in the first half.

"The goal was sloppy and sums up our whole afternoon.

"We know you can't play well every week but on days like these we've got to be resilient and do enough to take a point. I'll have a miserable weekend this weekend."
