Bolton   0 - 2   Blackburn

Blackburn picked up their first points away from home this season as they sent Bolton to a fourth successive defeat.

David Dunn volleyed wide and had a header cleared off the line early on.

Matthew Taylor's free-kick was deflected on to the bar but Rovers then went straight up the other end and Dunn curled a shot into the far post.

El-Hadji Diouf's volley and a Jason Roberts header were cleared off the line before Samuel Ricketts headed an own goal from 20 yards out.

The defender had attempted to send a routine header back to his keeper but Jussi Jaaskelainen had advanced to the edge of his area and the ball bounced into an empty net.

It was a woeful misunderstanding and indicative of a team that has failed to keep a clean sheet all season.

Megson call for unity after defeat

Bolton's defending was desperate throughout and they needed three goal-line interventions to keep the score down.

Although Rovers backline looked only marginally better at times, it was their superior attack that proved the difference - and also the quality of Dunn.

Neither side went into the game with a lot of confidence from their recent form - and Rovers had the added issue of the absence of their manager Sam Allardyce, who is set to undergo heart surgery.

With assistant manager Neil McDonald in charge - as he will be for the next two matches - Rovers were aiming to stop a run of 10 consecutive defeats on the road, stretching back eight months.

They quickly set about their task and the impressive Dunn went close with a volley before he had a header cleared off the line by Gary Cahill.

As Bolton tried to hit back, Taylor's free-kick from distance hit the bar via Ryan Nelsen's leg.

But within seconds, they found themselves a goal down as Rovers launched a fast counter-attack which saw Franco Di Santo find Roberts, who laid the ball off for Dunn to curl in without breaking his stride.

It was only the fourth goal Blackburn have scored away from home in the league.

Bolton responded and Taylor's curling free-kick curled was turned over the bar by Paul Robinson. From the resultant corner Taylor headed over at the near post when he should have scored.

Rovers had the next chance and were close to making it 2-0 but Gavin McCann cleared Diouf's volley off the line.

Away win a confidence boost - McDonald

Sensing they could still get themselves back in the game, Bolton piled forward after the break and Ricketts did well to cut the ball back for Gardner but he rushed his shot.

Chances continued to flow in an open second 45 minutes, with both defences looking far from solid.

Di Santo was denied by a point-blank save by Jaaskelainen, while Robinson also made a good save to deny Taylor.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, when the next goal came it was the result of awful defending.

Whether Jaaskelainen did not call or Ricketts did not hear it, neither will enjoying looking back at the moment when their mix-up put them 2-0 down.

Dunn almost made it 3-0 but Jaaskelainen made a good stop, diving low to his right.

Bolton almost got a consolation but Ivan Klasnic's shot was hooked away by Lars Jacobsen, as Blackburn took their turn to clear off the line.

The result leaves Bolton in the bottom three, while Blackburn cement their place in mid-table.

Bolton boss Gary Megson:
"We set off ok without being brilliant. We had a strike that hit the bar and the next time we touched the ball we were picking it out of our net.

"Once the second goal went in our heads dropped a lot and Blackburn ran out deserving winners.

"There is a confidence issue. We have to stay together and keep our spirit and hope we can play better."

Blackburn assistant manager Neil McDonald:
"I hope it will give Sam Allardyce a chance to recover knowing his team has done well.

"We are really pleased with the performance. Everyone played at the top of their game.

"We have got rid of our away hoodoo. We worked very hard to change that."
