Everton celebrate Leon Osman's equaliser
Everton players celebrate Leon Osman's (second left) stunning equaliser

By Chris Bevan

In-form Everton saw their five-game winning run ended by a battling Stoke side, who held on for a point.

Robert Huth put Stoke ahead against the run of play when he beat Tim Cahill to nod home Matthew Etherington's corner.

Leon Osman quickly levelled for the home side, expertly curling a shot into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Everton enjoyed most of the second-half possession but the closest they came to a winner was when Cahill sent a free header straight at Thomas Sorensen.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis warned his side this week that they are facing a difficult second season in the top flight, with teams now ready for their direct approach.

And, while Everton have been scoring for fun in recent weeks, Stoke had managed only five goals in their seven previous league games this season and appear to be lacking the bite up front they possessed last campaign.

Teams respect us now - Pulis

Pulis attempted to change that by fielding two strikers at Goodison Park, with ex-Toffees frontman James Beattie partnering Ricardo Fuller, but the move had only a limited effect.

Beattie brought the first save of the match out of Tim Howard when he met Etherington's corner, but nodded straight at the goalkeeper.

Fuller also had a sight of goal when he was first to Salif Diao's cross but saw his downward header bounce tamely into The American's arms.

But it was Everton who should have taken the lead when Cahill found space in the area to meet Marouane Fellaini's cross only to direct his header at Sorensen.

And the Toffees, who might have been feeling the effects of only returning from their Europa League match with BATE Borisov early on Friday, went on to dominate the rest of the first half.

Osman went close to breaking the deadlock when he retrieved a loose ball on the edge of the area and smashed in a shot that Sorensen did well to tip over after it flew through a crowd of players.

Stoke remained on the back foot at the start of the second half - so it was a surprise when they took the lead after 50 minutes, Huth out-jumping Cahill to nod home Etherington's corner.

The visitors led for only five minutes, however, before Osman levelled with a goal of real quality.

He exchanged passes with Johnny Heitinga before curling a beautiful shot into the top corner, the ball shaving the bar on its way into the net.

The equaliser might have been the cue for an Everton onslaught in the final half hour, as they continued to enjoy most of the possession in midfield.

Osman deserves captain's armband - Moyes

But, perhaps jaded by their efforts in Europe, David Moyes's side struggled to break down Stoke's defence despite introducing two more strikers in Jo and Yakubu.

Cahill should have done much better when he met Louis Saha's searching cross at the far post but his header was comfortable for Sorensen.

Jo had a shot blocked and Yakubu had a low shot saved but Sorensen was otherwise untroubled and Stoke will feel they fully deserved their draw.

Everton boss David Moyes:
"It was always going to be tough, they are very difficult to break down. We played some decent stuff, but maybe we didn't do enough to win it.

"We can play better than we did but, if you'd told me seven games ago that we would win our next six matches and draw one, I'd have taken that.

"We can't be too downhearted with picking up a point."

Stoke manager Tony Pulis:
"We were insipid against Manchester United last week but our passion and belief was back here.

"You have to be committed when you come here - they are a good footballing team but they also hit loads of angled balls to put us under pressure in the box.

"They bring an army up from defence for set-pieces too. We had to stand firm and we did that."
