Everton   3 - 0   Blackburn

Paul Robinson fails to prevent Everton scoring
Blackburn's Paul Robinson fails to prevent Louis Saha scoring Everton's first goal

By Phil Dawkes

Louis Saha scored twice as Everton put their early season problems behind them to record a convincing win over a committed but ineffectual Blackburn.

Saha gave Everton the lead, side-footing a volley past Rovers keeper Paul Robinson from a free-kick.

The French striker doubled the lead with a superb header into the bottom corner from a Marouane Fellaini cross.

Minutes later Joseph Yobo was allowed space to poke home from close range following a Leighton Baines corner.

Everton's worst start to a season since 2004 has been largely underpinned and then exacerbated by the respective loss of Joleon Lescott, who was sold to Manchester City last month, and Phil Neville, who tore his cruciate ligament against Fulham last weekend.

However, the absence of the defensive duo was no handicap to the home side's attacking prowess and twice during a high-tempo opening they forged half chances.

Team have found their rhythm - Moyes

Steven Pienaar and Baines combined and the latter found John Heitinga, who wasted the opportunity to make an immediate impact on his home debut by shooting high and wide.

Moments later, Pienaar found fellow midfielder Leon Osman on the move in the area but his shot was deflected narrowly wide for a corner that ultimately came to nothing.

Blackburn were also relieved of a star performer by Manchester City this summer when striker Roque Santa Cruz moved to Eastlands, but in Christopher Samba they have discovered a novel replacement method of creating chaos in the opposition's area.

From the towering centre-back's header, El-Hadji Diouf was presented with the chance to give the visitors the lead with their first attack, but his header struck the crossbar.

Shaken into action by such a close call, Everton struck a telling blow minutes later when Saha found space in the Blackburn box to side-foot volley the home side ahead from a Baines left-wing free-kick.

Everton's defensive frailty, enhanced further by the absence of injured centre-back Phil Jagielka, gave the visitors some cause for hope for the best part of an hour.

They almost capitalised early in the second half when Tim Howard palmed out Diouf's initial cross and David Dunn was allowed to control in the box before setting up Keith Andrews for a snap-shot that the Everton keeper did well to parry to safely.

In contrast to their hosts, Blackburn were able to select from a fully fit squad but despite such a luxury their finest were exposed by a double-salvo from Everton just before the hour mark.

Rovers lacked resilience - Allardyce

Fellaini found a yard of space close to the right-wing byeline and swung over a cross which Saha rose to head into the right-hand bottom corner of the net for his, and his team's second.

Barely three minutes later, Baines delivered a corner from the right, which Saha nodded on, Dunn failed to clear and Yobo was on hand to poke past Robinson from within the six-yard box.

Blackburn mustered one final surge in an attempt to gain a foothold in the game with substitute David Hoilett finding Diouf on the edge of the box but with Howard's fine save from the Senegalese's strike the visitors fight was extinguished.

In the final quarter, Pienaar twice engineered space for himself and unleashed goal-bound efforts from long range but on each occasion Robinson was equal to it with superb one-handed saves while Sylvain Distin saw a header cleared off the line.

Everton manager David Moyes:
"I enjoyed the result and the performance. At times we were very good.

"Blackburn made it difficult, particularly in the first half, but we were able to defend their set pieces.

"I think Saha is a terrific player and he's right up there with the best I've ever worked with.

"With the quality of the players we have, we're much better than we've shown so far."

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce:
"I think we were poor to be honest. We've got no resilience away from home.

"We let ourselves down on set pieces and gave Everton an easy victory. We could have stopped two goals from a corner and a free-kick.

"We're not getting the results we need to avoid struggling this season.

"It's a disappointing result and a disappointing performance but it's one we need to get over."
