Sunderland   4 - 1   Hull

By Owen Phillips

Steed Malbranque (l) congratulates Darren Bent
Bent has four goals in five games for Sunderland

Summer signing Darren Bent took his tally to four goals in five games as Sunderland eased past Hull to climb to sixth spot in the Premier League.

The Black Cats went ahead when Bent confidently scored from the penalty spot after Craig Fagan handled.

Hull drew level through Kamil Zayatte's header but Andy Reid restored the home side's lead with a measured volley.

Bent raced through unchallenged to fire in the third and Zayatte's headed own goal completed the rout.

Zayatte's 75th-minute blunder capped a disastrous second half for the defender and manager Phil Brown.

Despite being outplayed for most of the first period, the Tigers recovered to draw level but they capitulated after the interval and Steve Bruce's men went on to secure a thoroughly deserved win.

Bruce praises Sunderland quality

Sunderland's midfield combined productively throughout, with Lee Cattermole and Lorik Cana providing the industry in the middle and Andy Reid and Steed Malbranque bringing the artistry to the flanks.

Malbranque's direct running was giving Andy Dawson a torrid time on the right while Reid saw plenty of the ball on the opposite wing and rarely wasted possession.

It was from a Reid corner that the Black Cats deservedly took the lead on 13 minutes when the Republic of Ireland's left-wing centre was inexplicably handled by Fagan.

Bent, showing all the confidence of a man who has now scored four goals in five goals for his new club, smashed the ball low and hard to the left of keeper Boaz Myhill.

The Wearsiders, who lost five of their last seven home matches, seemed likely to add to their tally as they continued to boss the opening half-hour.

Defensively Michael Turner was rock solid against the club he left last month and Frazier Campbell was posing all sorts of problems against his former side's defence at the other end.

Brown blames defeat on 'reckless' errors

A third win in five games seemed on the cards but despite being outgunned in the middle of the park Hull started to settle.

Geovanni, playing just behind Fagan, was heavily involved in all Hull's best moves and after a spell of sustained pressure which saw them test Sunderland with three dangerous set-pieces, they equalised.

Playmaker Geovanni whipped in a corner and Zayatte, using a combination of head and shoulder, untidily forced the ball home from six yards.

Bruce's men have now conceded six goals so far this season and four of them have come from set-pieces and he would no doubt have been furious with the slack marking.

But Hull's hard work was soon undone when within five minutes of the re-start, Reid smashed Sunderland back into the lead.

Phil Bardsley showed great composure to dink in a cross from the left and Reid, making his first Premier League start of the season, fizzed a fine shot into the bottom corner.

The Sunderland victory was all but secured when some terrible positioning from Zayatte played Bent onside and the former Tottenham striker strolled on to Malbranque's pass and smashed the ball home.

Brown's side briefly threatened a late comeback from a couple of corners that the home side struggled to clear.

But Hull and Zayatte's misery was complete when Turner pressurised the defender into heading in the fourth from another corner.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce:
"In the first half we got a bit carried away and were basically trying too hard. For half an hour we were on top then got a bit sloppy and we got pinned back.

"In the second we did much better, passed the ball better and we had a bit more penetration.

"We had to take care of the ball. We were that desperate to do well that we forgot to pass the ball. That's what I said at half-time.

"It's a decent start but if we think we're cracked it then we'll get our backsides kicked. Things are going the right way at the moment, let's hope it stays that way."

Hull manager Phil Brown:
"It was bitterly disappointing. We had a foothold in the game and played some good stuff in the first half.

"But the most important thing is what is going on between the ears and in the second half we committed too many individual errors.

"If you look at the statistics we were well in the game but the biggest statistic is that we conceded four goals.

"There will be a lot of hard work on the training ground this week. You defend as a unit but we switched off for the second goal, the third goal the two centre-backs got it wrong and the fourth goal was from a set-piece."
