Diouf celebrates Blackburn's opener

Blackburn saw off Wolves in emphatic style to notch up their first Premier League win of the season.

El Hadji Diouf capitalised on a defensive blunder by Chelsea loanee Michael Mancienne to open the scoring.

Jason Roberts claimed Blackburn's second after Gael Givet's header took a deflection, before David Dunn added the third from close range.

Austria international Stefan Maierhofer came off the bench to mark his debut with a late consolation for Wolves.

The build-up to the game had been dominated by talk of Blackburn's failure to score in three consecutive home games stretching back to the tail-end of last season.

Queen Victoria was on the throne when Blackburn last experienced a comparable goal drought, but Wolves manager Mick McCarthy would not have been amused at the manner in which the Lancastrians consigned the unwanted record to history.

Allardyce relieved to get first win

Mancienne's failure to read a straightforward pass from Karl Henry just outside the centre circle left Diouf with a clear run at goal, which he capped by slotting calmly through the legs of keeper Wayne Hennessey.

The Senegal international's second Premier League strike since his January move from Sunderland left Wolves ruing their failure to capitalise on earlier opportunities.

Wanderers' defender Christophe Berra squandered a chance to mark his Premier League debut with a goal when he fired wide after a fumble by Paul Robinson.

Andy Keogh then produced an air shot after combining well with Richard Stearman, but from there Blackburn dominated.

606: DEBATE

With Roberts proving an increasing handful for a Wolves defence shorn of the leadership of skipper Jody Craddock, Hennessy did well to claw a Morten Gamst Pedersen free-kick behind.

Mancienne then came under scrutiny again when his weak defensive header fell to Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews, who forced a fine sprawling save from Hennessey.

Blackburn underlined their superiority on the brink of half-time when Pedersen shuddered the woodwork with another sweetly-struck free-kick.

McCarthy's half-time introduction of new signing Maierhofer gave Wolves fresh impetus, the former Rapid Vienna man sending a long-range effort narrowly wide within minutes of his arrival.

But Wanderers' hopes of gaining a foothold in the match were dashed when a Dunn corner found Givet in space at the back post. The Frenchman's firm header took a slight deflection off Roberts, who was quick to claim his first goal of the campaign.

McCarthy frustrated by defeat

Blackburn made it three when Pedersen swung in a defence-splitting cross from the left to Roberts, whose initial effort, partially slowed by the hand of the advancing Hennessy, was tucked home by Dunn.

Maierhofer, who scored 23 goals in 37 games for Rapid Vienna last season, rifled home a Matthew Jarvis corner at the death to begin his Premier League career in auspicious style.

But on an afternoon dominated by Sam Allardyce's resurgent side, it was too little, too late for Wanderers.

Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce:

"I'm delighted with the performance, which has brought us what we deserved.

"The players showed a lot of spirit and a lot of quality.

"It's a relief that we have three points in the bag at last."

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy:

"I'm disappointed and a little bit frustrated about the manner in which we conceded the goals.

"I thought we'd settled into the game after 15 minutes, but we made a mistake and got punished.

"We've competed better than we did today, but it's a long way back even from one goal down in the Premiership."
