Wolverhampton   1 - 1   Hull

By John Sinnott

Geovanni gives Hull the lead
Geovanni gave Hull the lead after three minutes

Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to draw with Hull and secure their first home point of the season.

They fell behind after only three minutes when Stephen Hunt's cross was headed in from close range by Geovanni.

And Hull easily contained Wolves until the opening minute of the second half when Richard Stearman volleyed in.

Wolves should have gone on to win but Andy Keogh tamely shot wide, while Kevin Doyle's point-blank volley was superbly blocked by Michael Turner.

The newly-promoted home side's problems in front of goal - they had only managed one goal this season prior to Saturday - were amply demonstrated by those misses by Keogh and Doyle.

Record signing Doyle was making his first Premier League appearance for the club and the Republic of Ireland striker showed glimpses of why manager Mick McCarthy paid Reading £6.5m to sign him.

606: DEBATE

He has the ability to control the ball and bring his team-mates into play, and is not short of pace as he showed when he sprinted past Steven Mouyokolo, who picked up a yellow card after fouling the Wolves striker.

But in the first half it was Keogh who had Wolves' more promising openings, first testing Boaz Myhill with a shot and then skying an effort over the bar after adroitly working himself space in the box.

His hurried effort typified much of Wolves' play as they attempted to haul themselves back into the game after Geovanni's third-minute goal.

Given his diminutive stature Geovanni was an unlikely candidate to arrive in front of Matt Jarvis and George Elokobi to nod in Hunt's cross from the left, but that is just what the Brazilian did.

It was not the only time in the first half that Wolves failed to deal with crosses and Kamel Ghilas should have done better when he was left unmarked at the far post, but headed straight at Wayne Hennessey.

Having struggled to seriously trouble Myhill in the opening half, Wolves were level within 40 seconds of the restart, with the equaliser fashioned by a trio of defenders.

Michael Mancienne's free-kick was headed on by Jody Craddock and Stearman reacted quickly to power a volley past Myhill.

McCarthy - We'll rue our missed chances

The goal transformed Wolves, prompting a more confident and upbeat approach from the home side.

Unfortunately their strikers continued to lack the killer touch with Keogh flashing a header straight at Myhill from an unmarked position, while a couple of promising Doyle runs ended up in a Hull defensive cul-de-sac.

Stearman and Craddock then fashioned a chance, with the Wolves goalscorer crossing from the right for the former Sunderland defender, whose header went just over the bar.

In the closing stages Elokobi's intelligent pass set Keogh free, but he somehow contrived to roll the ball past the post when he only had Myhill to beat.

Hull were then rescued by Turner's bravery as their captain threw himself in front of Doyle's goalbound shot and in the closing stages substitute Sam Vokes headed wide from another goalscoring opportunity.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:
"To me, it is two points lost. We were rocked on our heels for about

10 minutes after they scored but then we were the dominant team.

"We had the chances and that clearance on the line from Michael Turner stopped them from going behind. He is a good player.

"In the second half we were terrific. We should have killed the game off and Hull will view it as a good point."

Hull manager Phil Brown:
"I was disappointed to lose a goal so early in the second half.

Brown - Wolves threw everything at us

"We went a little bit deep and didn't deal with the first ball, nor the second one - it was inexcusable. It was a basic error and shouldn't happen in the Premier League but frequently does.

"The timing of that goal knocked the stuffings out of our sails and we had to dig in a little bit for the rest of the half."
